Duties

Natural Resources Canada requires an experienced marine technologist to plan and prepare devices for field data collection, to carry out field work, and to compile current and legacy data and metadata. The majority of the field work is marine related and involves collecting scientific and geospatial data for field surveys from days to weeks in duration.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff one position located in Sidney, B.C. for a two year period.

A pool of (fully or partially) qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the EG-04 group and level within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential or Bilingual), various methods for staffing a bilingual position (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), in various locations and with various conditions of employment.

Successful completion of an acceptable educational program from a recognized post-secondary institution in geography, information management, or another field related to the duties of the position, or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

EEx 1: Experience working in a laboratory environment that collects digital data.
EEx 2: Experience in installing and servicing computer equipment.
EEx 3: Experience making data connections between computers and equipment.
EEx 4: Experience in compiling scientific data using a geographic information system such as ArcGIS.
EEx 5: Experience creating tables and graphs for the presentation of written reports.
EEx 6: Experience providing technical information, advice and/or services related to scientific data acquisition.

AEd1: Successful completion of an acceptable diploma program from a recognized post-secondary institution in Oceans Technology, Marine Geoscience or equivalent.

Degree equivalency

AEx1: Experience working offshore for a period of at least 2 weeks.
AEx2: Experience collecting scientific data, including navigation, at sea or in field conditions.
AEx3: Experience implementing health and safety guidelines, processes and procedures.
AEx4: Experience operating a forklift.
AEx5: Experience calibrating and maintaining scientific measurement equipment.
AEx6: Experience performing Quality Control / Quality Assurance on large (>10000 element) data sets.
AEx7: Experience troubleshooting electrical equipment.
AEx8: Experience using relational database software.
AEx9: Experience providing training on safety or safe use of equipment.

AK1: Knowledge of satellite navigation systems and their data streams.

AA1: Ability to read electronic circuit diagrams for simple problem diagnosis and repair.

Conditions of employment

CoE1: Medical clearance in accordance with Treasury Board Occupational Health Evaluation Standards for field work.
CoE2: Valid class 5 driver’s licence
CoE3: Willingness and ability to participate in multiple seagoing expeditions of up to one month’s duration, for up to 4 months each year.
CoE4: Willingness and ability to work under adverse field conditions on a variety of platforms including research vessels and as part of land-based survey parties.
CoE5: Willing and able to lift heavy objects (20 kg).
