Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural sciences in one of the specializations* listed below or other specialization related to the duties of the position, or the employer-approved alternative for the SE classification. Note:
1. The employer-approved alternative for the SE classification is an acceptable master's or bachelor's degree coupled with acceptable research, training and experience. The degree must be from a recognized post-secondary institution and in scientific fields and specialties related to the duties of the position. The training and experience must clearly demonstrate the ability to do personal research of doctoral degree calibre.
PRODUCTIVITY/RECOGNITION
Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
• Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
• Operational research and scientific analysis;
• Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.
Experience in developing, and conducting research to advance knowledge in one of the streams (see below).
Experience in working with a team of researchers and support staff.
Stream 1: Geo-environment
Experience in the implementation and interpretation of regional or local environmental geochemical studies.
Experience using state-of-the-art geochemical instruments.
Experience in using geographic information systems, processing multi-source data, or earth observation techniques.
Stream 2: Hydrogeology
Experience in using state-of-the-art hydrogeology instruments.
Experience in conducting regional or local hydrogeological surveys.
Experience in using geographic information systems, processing multi-source data, or earth observation techniques.
Stream 3: Mine Waste Management
Experience preparing or reviewing mine waste geochemistry assessments, and/or water quality predictions and/or modelling for mining projects, especially related to acidic drainage and metal leaching.
Experience in the evaluation of technologies for the prevention and control, and/or mitigation of water quality impacts from mining projects.
Experience in conducting research in mining and minerals environmental sciences related to mining projects, such as: Geology, geochemical characterization (prediction), management of mine wastes (tailings, waste rock, sludge and mining effluents), prevention and mitigation, and reclamation technologies.
Experience integrating “traditional/indigenous knowledge”.
Experience in conducting regional or local geochemical surveys in temperate or cold regions.
Experience planning or developing mining, oil or gas projects.
Experience working at a mining, oil or gas operation.
Significant* experience in one of the streams.
Significant is defined as approximately 3 years of experience within the last 6 years.

Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation and regulations as they apply to mining projects and mine waste management.
Knowledge of Canadian mining industry and mining practices.
Knowledge of mine waste management, mine water management and acidic drainage/metal leaching.
Knowledge of risk evaluation of impacts of mining activities on water quality and local communities.
Knowledge of workplace health and safety measures and procedures.
