Duties

As a Multidisciplinary Hydrographer Trainee, you can expect to:

Participate in field hydrographic survey parties engaged in the acquisition of hydrographic data; calibrates depth and positioning equipment; assists with the installation of tide gauges and erects survey markers; reads and records data from tidal, distance and depth measurement systems; shares responsibility for the operation of a survey launch to collect hydrographic data.

Provide information to validate hydrographic data; locates and archives survey records, field notes, sketches and topographic information and performs calculations and computations.

Digitize, validate, process and transform hydrographic data; operates digitizing equipment and software; operates computer assisted editing stations and other technical applications to transform and compile data required for the production of CHS nautical charts and related products.

Work environment

The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) Multidisciplinary Hydrographer (MDH) is a Professional Development and Apprenticeship Program (PDAP) including a formal training program. The training program is designed for new indeterminate employees who have academic training in an appropriate field, but whose knowledge and experience need to be developed to achieve the working level. This program combines theoretical training with practical experience and may last for five years providing successful demonstration of various pre-established competencies.

The entry level is EG-02 and the working level is EG-05, which requires the successful completion of the PDAP training.

Intent of the process

The purpose of this process is to create an inventory of candidates that will be used to fill Multidisciplinary Hydrographer Trainee positions within the Department of Fisheries and Oceans exclusively in Burlington ON.

The first withdrawal of candidates will be held August 1, 2018. Consequently, we strongly encourage you to complete your application and submit it before this date in order to be part of the first group assessed. All subsequent withdrawal of applications will occur based on operational needs.

Graduation with a degree or a diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with a specialization in Geomatics, Cartography, Geography, or in an acceptable related discipline such as Physical Sciences, Nautical Science or Remote Sensing

Degree equivalency

Basic computer experience using operating systems and office productivity programs

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

A graduate degree or a post-graduate certificate from a recognized institution with a specialization in Geomatics, Cartography, Geography, Survey, or in an acceptable related discipline such as Physical Sciences, Nautical Science or Remote Sensing.

Degree equivalency

Basic experience in at least one of the following areas: field hydrography, tides, currents and water levels, production of nautical products, or data management;

Basic experience with using geospatial software.

Basic experience in sea-going operations.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Valid driver’s licence;
• Medical clearance;
• Travel anywhere in Canada, by car, truck, ship, launch, helicopter or small plane, and may entail work at sea and in the field;
• Overtime, working on weekends and shift work;
• Working away from home and/or in isolated areas for extended periods;
• May be required to carry firearms while working in remote areas (Pacific region exempt only).

Candidates must meet all of the essential qualifications noted in the Statement of Merit Criteria to be appointed to a position. A candidate may be appointed to a position even though he/she does not meet any or all of the asset qualifications or operational requirements. However, meeting these criteria is desirable and may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed.
