These positions are located in Iqaluit, Nunavut. The salary range for the PC-02 positions is from $68,891 to $82,590 and from $83,007 to $98,777 for the PC-03 positions, plus northern allowance (from $19,000 to $31,000 per year) and vacation travel assistance (approximately $2,000 to $3,000 per person (i.e. per employee and each of the eligible dependants), twice per year).

Duties

Staff Geologists (Stream 1) provide scientific and technical advice and geoscience information to external and internal clients; evaluate reports of work (assessment reports) for technical worth and compliance with the Nunavut Mining Regulations, subject to review by District Geologist or Manager, Mineral Resources; take an active role in reporting upon and promoting the geology and mineral potential of Nunavut; visit mines and exploration projects to improve own knowledge of mineral deposits in Nunavut; attend meetings, conferences, forums, and workshops to raise the profile of Nunavut; and write and edit scientific papers, contribute to general interest publications and deliver presentations at conferences and meetings.

District Geologists (Stream 2) provide scientific and technical advice and geoscience information to external and internal clients; evaluate reports of work (assessment reports) for technical worth and compliance with the Nunavut Mining Regulations; report upon and promote the geology and mineral potential of Nunavut; visit mines and exploration projects for monitoring and to improve own knowledge of mineral deposits in Nunavut; write and edit scientific papers, contribute to general interest publications, and deliver presentations at conferences and meetings; and develop, plan, and conduct geoscience research and report on the results of that research.

Intent of the process

The intent of this process is for indeterminate (permanent) appointments. It is, however, at the anticipatory stage.

A qualified pool of candidates resulting from this staffing process may be established and may be used to fill similar positions at Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs and other Federal Departments and Agencies located in Nunavut.

EDUCATION:

Streams 1 and 2
- Graduation with a degree* from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

*The term "degree" refers to a baccalaureate as established by educational authorities. The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

Streams 1 and 2
- Recent* experience in mineral exploration or geological field research methods.

*Defined as experience that was obtained within the last ten years.

Stream 2 only
- Experience working in geology or mineral exploration in Northern** Canada.

**Defined as those areas of Canada that lie north of the southern limit of discontinuous permafrost.

- Experience working in a cross-cultural environment, specifically as it relates to Inuit culture and values.

- Ability and willingness to travel on small aircrafts, helicopters, boats, snowmobiles, and all-terrain vehicles.
- Ability and willingness to travel from home base for extended periods.
- Reliability Status.
- Medical Clearance established for the position (if required).
