The Technical Services Team, as part of Operations, is seeking a Process Safety and Assurance Engineer to support the delivery of engineering and pilot plant testing services for applied research conducted at CanmetENERGY in Devon. The Technical Services Team is a multidisciplinary team of about 20 professional and technical staff responsible for operation of world-class pilot-scale facilities with specialty toward hydrocarbon extraction, upgrading, and refining. The team works with both internal CanmetENERGY Devon R&D teams and external industrial clients to ensure pilot plant projects are executed safely and to the clients’ needs. It is a dynamic environment with the team working on multiple projects at any given time. Current pilot plant facilities include both batch units and continuous plants with feed rates in the range of a less than a litre a day to over a litre a minute.
The Process Safety and Assurance Engineer will provide oversight and ensure that plant construction, modification, and operations are performed safely, efficiently, and to the appropriate engineering standard. This will include designing and implementing safety reviews, management of change, investigations, and quality assurance processes for new and existing pilot plants and operations.

The CanmetENERGY laboratory in Devon (AB) brings together scientists, engineers, and technologists in a state-of-the-art R&D facility for innovation in energy technology. We focus on providing innovation solutions for the environmentally-responsible production and processing of hydrocarbon resources, and for mitigating the associated environmental impacts of these operations. CanmetENERGY in Devon collaborates with industry, provincial/territorial government, academic institutions, and international organizations in research, development, and deployment of new technologies and innovations. Our highly qualified research staff are capable of handling the most complex theoretical and practical project tasks related to the production, processing, and transportation of oil sands bitumen and petroleum products and have the skills and experience to move projects from concept to bench-scale to pilot-scale testing.
The intent of this process is to staff one ENG-03 position in Devon, Alberta for a period of 2 years, with the possibility of extension.
A pool of qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar ENG-03 positions at Natural Resources Canada in various locations across the country, with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements and various conditions of employment.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in chemical or mechanical engineering, or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position
Experience preparing engineering modification packages and supervising modifications (i.e., management of change – MoC)
Significant* experience in conducting process safety review for engineering projects or plant/pilot operations (e.g., HAZOP, HAZID, PHA, LOPA, etc.)
Significant* experience investigating process safety incidents
Experience preparing and reviewing specifications for systems, prototypes, and facilities
Experience defining/interpreting and implementing engineering standards and practices
*Significant experience would normally be acquired with approximately 5 years experience.

Experience conducting engineering work*** related to oil sands processing
***Engineering work may include, but is not limited to, design, construction, quality assurance, inspection, safety audit, and/or testing
Experience in independently planning, organizing, conducting and reporting on projects
Experience conducting innovative engineering in support of oil and gas industry research projects
Experience working in froth treatment pilot plant and research labs
Experience designing oil sands processing, bitumen extraction and bitumen production plants including refinery and petrochemical plants
