The Occupational Health and Safety(OHS) advisor works with a very diverse client group all over the Pacific Region, in BC and the Yukon. The advisor role includes:
• DFO’s Health &Safety ( H&S) professionals serve and advise an extremely diverse occupational population. From Lighthouse Keepers to Fishery Officers, from Research Scientists and field Biologists to Worksite Labours, From Seagoing personnel to Fish hatchery technicians and from Office employees to the Regional Management Team.
• Workplace safety at every one of our 155+ staffed Pacific Region locations involves supporting our employees and managers through the provision of timely advice based on the Canada Labour Code, the Canada Occupational H&S Regulations and Department Policy in a number of areas; Helicopter Safety, Firearms for non-enforcement staff, Workplace Inspections, Departmental Diving and most recently based on the COHS Regulation 20, Violence in The Workplace as well as many other standards and guidelines.
• DFO has a large amount of staff who work away from ‘the office’ interacting with the public and we have ‘the public’ coming onto our worksites in order to view the work we do in promoting good stewardship of our fishery resources. Both of these situations require DFO employees to have a good understanding of their H&S responsibilities when they are working with non-employees and the OHS Advisor is there to provide answers to the questions they often have.
• DFO OHS Advisors work with our many OHS Committees and our OHS Representatives throughout the Pacific Region. This calls for providing advice to our committees and reps as questions arise.
• Delivering Health & Safety Training to our employees calls for traveling around the Pacific Region. This is a great way to learn about the diverse work our staff accomplish everyday as well as an excellent opportunity to meet our clients and discuss the Health & Safety issues they encounter at their locations.
• DFO Pacific Region Health & Safety spends a great deal of time networking with our National Colleagues as we continue to grow and standardise the program. This requires teleconferences and face to face meetings with all of the OHS Advisors from each of the regions in the country. This is an excellent opportunity for both learning and teaching Health & Safety concepts which have worked well in other locations within DFO.
The candidate pool resulting from this selection process may be used to staff similar positions on an indeterminate or term basis throughout the Pacific Region.
