The Environmental Analyst is responsible for ensuring all IOGC’s and other environmental guidelines, policies, and regulations in relation to oil and gas activities on First Nation reserve land are promoted and adhered to. The position requires careful consideration of social (including Traditional Ecological Knowledge), economic and environmental factors as well as legal requirements, emerging scientific research, technology, and industry best practices.
Environmental Analysts are IOGC’s frontline representatives and the relationships developed and maintained with First Nation representatives and Chief and Councils are paramount. The Environmental Analyst is responsible for ensuring both the spirit and intent of federal Aboriginal consultation requirements are met and documented throughout the life cycle of oil and gas development projects.
The work can be stressful in that it involves balancing multiple priorities. The incumbent must work towards reconciling the interests of many parties who often have conflicting interests, developing new policies and practices which reflect the dual mandate of fulfilling the Crown's fiduciary and statutory obligations as well as furthering First Nation initiatives to manage and control their oil and gas resources. Careful consideration and diligence is required to ensure activities and decisions do not adversely affect the government’s position in potential legal cases.
The decisions, recommendations, and policies developed and implemented by the Environment Unit have significant impact on the management of First Nations oil and gas and may also impact departmental liability, judgement, and initiatives.
IOGC is located away from Calgary's downtown core at the west end of Anderson Road on Tsuu T'ina First Nation lands.
