Canada is uniquely blessed with an abundance of freshwater and marine and coastal areas that are ecologically diverse and economically significant. The core business of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard, managing Canada’s fisheries and safeguarding its waters, is central to who we are as a Department. Our work is part of the daily lives of Canadians.
Small Craft Harbors is a nationwide program run by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). More than 5,000 volunteers assist the program annually. It keeps the harbors that are critical to the fishing industry open and in good repair. The program operates and maintains a national system of harbors to provide commercial fish harvesters and other harbor users with safe and accessible facilities.
Small craft harbors are crucial to the fishing industry, and by extension, the Canadian culture and economy. As of May 2018, the program is responsible for 1,013 harbours, including 883 fishing harbors and 130 recreational harbors. Together, these harbors represent over 10,000 structures valued at approximately $6.03 billion. A s a result of the 2016-2018 Federal Infrastructure Initiative, about 148,6 millions of dollars over two years (48,0 M$ for the Québec Region) have been invested in the Small Crafts Harbor network. In accordance to Budget 2018, an additional 250,0 millions of dollars over two years (33,9 M$ for the Québec Region) will also be invested in this network.
