Duties

Reporting to the manager, the IT Specialist is responsible for deploying, configuring and maintain OPC IT infrastructure tools, providing administration services and providing application’s support to sectors within the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. Specifically, the position will provide technical advice, solutions and recommendations on various technological topics touching OPC IT infrastructure.

Under the supervision of the manager, the incumbent will provide, among other things, technical services to support clients in the following areas:
• Develop and evaluate best practices for operating OPC IT Infrastructure
• Select and implement security systems with other infrastructure components
• Evaluate application security and updates for deployment
• Evaluate third party tools and feature sets
• Register problems with the application/tool server vendor
• Evaluates new application/tool server releases for inclusion in OPC platform
• Deploy, configure and maintain virtual machine infrastructures
• Deploy, configure and maintain physical servers (mainly used to host the hypervisor)
• Deploy, configure and maintain Storage Area Network (SAN) equipment
• Configure and maintain the tape library backup appliance
• Configure and maintain the backup infrastructure
• Monitor systems and network activities for performance and security threats
• Prepare documentation and design artifacts regarding OPC IT infrastructure and Operations
• Access compliancy with regulations and guidelines
• Work with suppliers to obtain estimates for potential IT components

Intent of the process

This process may be used to establish a pool of candidates that may be used to staff similar positions at an identical or equivalent group and level with various official language proficiency (Bilingual Imperative CBC/CBC, Bilingual Imperative CCC/CCC, bilingual imperative BBB/BBB, English Essential) various security profiles (reliability, secret, top secret), various tenures (indeterminate, specified period) using various staffing activities (indeterminate, term, deployment, acting, assignment, secondment) for positions with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or the Public Service.

EDUCATION
Successful completion of two years of an acceptable post-secondary educational program in computer science, information technology, information management or another specialty relevant to the position being staffed.

Notes:
1. Indeterminate period incumbents of positions in the CS group on May 10, 1999, who do not possess the education prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standards based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing positions in the CS group.
2. It is the recognized educational institution (e.g. community college, CÉGEP or university) that determines if the courses taken by a candidate correspond to two years of a post-secondary program at the institution.
3. At the manager's discretion, an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience may serve as an alternative to the minimum post-secondary education stated above. Whenever the minimum education is met using this alternative, it is met for the specific position only and must be re-assessed for other positions for which this alternative has been specified by the manager.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
- Experience monitoring and maintaining a secure IT environment following Government of Canada standards (ITSG) or other commonly accepted international standards on IT Security.
- Experience in analyzing client requests, suggesting technical solution recommendations, and contributing in the conceptual design phases of IT initiatives.
- Experience administering enterprise level virtual server environment (such as VMware ESXi).
- Experience administering enterprise Storage Area Networks (SAN) and centralized backup infrastructure.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE
Experience with VMware ESXi and/or vCenter 5.5 or newer.
Experience managing a VEEAM backup environment.
Experience with EMC VNX Storage Area Network – SAN.
