At the Marine Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) St. John’s, the Maritime SAR Coordinators will rotate between the Maritime SAR Coordinator desk and the alerting desk.

To establish a pool of qualified candidates which may be used to staff this, similar, or lower level positions within the Canadian Coast Guard in the Atlantic Region on an indeterminate, specified period (term), or acting basis.

EDUCATION:
• Successful completion of secondary school (high school)

Degree equivalency

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
• A valid Watchkeeping Mate Certificate issued under the CANADA SHIPPING ACT, 2001 Marine Personnel Regulations SOR/2007-115, with a valid STCW 95 endorsement
OR
• A valid Maritime Command Naval Officer Professional Qualification (NOPQ) - the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). All candidates with a Maritime Command Naval Officer Professional Qualification (NOPQ) must have submitted all supporting training certificates to Transport Canada Marine Safety and received approved equivalency.

EXPERIENCE:
• Minimum of 12 months sea time in the last five (5) years as a navigation officer in charge of a watch. (EXN-25 or equivalent proof of sea time may be required).
OR
• Minimum of 12 months experience in the last five years as a maritime coordinator in a Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) or Marine Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) in Canada.

KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue roles and responsibilities in the federal Search and Rescue (SAR) system.
• Knowledge of maritime operations and geography in the Halifax Search & Rescue Region (Halifax SRR).
• Knowledge of maritime search and rescue practices and procedures.
• Knowledge of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).

ABILITIES:
• Ability to synthesize information
• Ability to communicate effectively orally.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
• Ability to use a computer

ASSET OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
• A valid Chief Mate, Near Coastal certificate of competency or higher issued under the CANADA SHIPPING ACT, 2001 Marine Personnel Regulations.

ASSET EXPERIENCE:
• Recent experience (within the last five years) in the position of Commanding Officer or Chief Mate of a vessel.
• Experience working in a Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC) or a Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC).
• Experience as an MCTS officer/shift supervisor.
• Experience in an emergency operations center.

Successful candidates who are offered employment as a result of this selection process will be required to complete the following training courses within (approximately) 12 months:
• SAR Mission Coordinator Course (SMC)
• Maritime Search Planning Course (MSP)
• Maritime SAR Coordinator on-the-job training package
The SAR Mission Coordinator Course (SMC) and Maritime Search Planning Course (MSP) will take place at the Coast Guard College in Sydney, NS and are approximately 5 weeks (total) in duration.

Conditions of employment

Secret security clearance

OTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
• Requirement to work 12 hour day and night shifts on a rotating shift schedule, including weekends and holidays.
• Requirement to work overtime when required.
• Requirement to travel by various modes of transportation such as boat, airplane or helicopter.
• Requirement to be part of a stand-by schedule and work overtime shifts.
• Medical: Health Canada Category 3 medical.
• Valid Driver's Licence (for the purposes of driving a departmental vehicle or a rental car)
• Requirement to wear CCG uniform while on duty.
