Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) works collaboratively with partners to improve access to high quality services for First Nations, Inuit and Métis. Our vision is to support and empower Indigenous peoples to independently deliver services and address the socio-economic conditions in their communities.

First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB), Indigenous Services Canada is recruiting for an experienced Registered Nurse to join its Regional Home & Community Care Team. In this position the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with our First Nations and Inuit partners to enhance the health and well-being of Home and Community Care clients.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING…

As a member of the Regional Home & Community Care Advisor team the successful candidate will provide guidance, advice, and assistance to First Nations organizations through all stages of program implementation and development. Some specific duties are as follows:
• Assist community leadership and nurses in the development of service delivery plans and quality improvement (QI) activities.
• Assist our partners in the implementation and delivery of their Home Care Program(s).
• Provide advisory and consultative services as well as professional support and guidance to community-based nurses and unregulated workers.
• Conduct monitoring activities such as site visits and chart audits to ensure adherence to program standards, provide useful feedback, and assistance to communities if required.
• Work closely with our community-based partners to identify training needs and opportunities for education.
• Develop and deliver Home Care specific educational and promotional sessions to varied audiences.

Education:
Graduation with a degree* from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in nursing, nursing service administration, nursing education or some other specialty relevant to the position.

*A baccalaureate or higher level degree, as established by educational authorities.

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:
Eligibility for registration as a registered nurse (RN) in a province or territory of Canada.

Experience:
Recent and significant* experience as a Registered Nurse in the area of Home and Community Care.

* Recent and significant is defined as the depth and breadth of experience associated with full time performance of duties for a minimum period of 2 years within the last 3 years.

Education:
A Masters’ degree in Nursing, Public Health, Education or Leadership/Management.

Degree equivalency

Occupational Certification:
• Certification and experience in wound care and/or foot care management.
• Certificate in Enterostomal Therapy

Knowledge:
• Knowledge of current issues of healthcare in Canada and First Nations communities.
• Knowledge of current research supporting best practices in primary health care and chronic disease management and prevention.

• Proficiency in speaking a First Nations’ language.

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS:
Selection may be limited to members of the following Employment Equity Groups: Aboriginal persons, visible minorities, and persons with disabilities.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Travel to rural or remote locations on gravel roads or small aircraft.
• Travel to rural or remote locations for up to a week (7 days) at a time.
• CPR Certificate, Healthcare Provider Level C, renewed annually.
• Willingness and ability to work overtime on occasion
• Willingness and ability to work overtime in the event of a public health emergency or outbreak.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• A medical clearance is required (remote/isolated only);
• Possession of a valid driver’s license.
• Continuous professional registration (in good standing) with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA).
