The salary rate of appointment to the group of Defense Scientists (DS) is based on incumbent's qualifications (education and experiences) and is determined by the evaluation committee.

Duties

To plan, organize, supervise, execute and document R&D work in the fields of biomechanics of injury caused by various operational threats (impact, ballistic, blast) and development of biofidelic physical models. Propose and manage R&D contracts with the industry, initiate and participate to collaborations with the academia, provide scientific advices to CAF representatives and represent Canada and DRDC on international working groups and conferences.

EDUCATION
Master degree from a recognized post-secondary academic establishment in mechanical engineering, biomechanical engineering, material engineering, biomedical engineering or other engineering program with a specialization in an area of biomechanics.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE :
- A minimum of 5 years of experience, including graduate studies, in applied research in a field having both engineering and biomedical aspects, and having a strong experimental component.
- Experience in planning, organizing, coordinating and executing research projects in a field of biomechanics within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Experience in writing scientific documents in one or multiple fields of expertise related to biomechanics.

KNOWLEDGE :
- General knowledge in biomechanics
- General knowledge in material behavior

EDUCATION
PhD or post-doctorate experience from a recognized post-secondary academic establishment in physical engineering or mechanical engineering with a specialization in an area of biomechanics.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE IN ONE OR SEVERAL OF THE FOLLOWING FIELDS :
Analysis of the response of biological systems subjected to mechanical loads.
Analysis of injury mechanisms.
Design and conduct of science and technology projects with possible defense applications.
Development and execution of partnerships and scientific collaborative projects between industry, government and/or academia.
Provide technical recommendations and scientific advice to inform decision-making.

Conditions of employment

CONDITION(S) OF EMPLOYMENT

- Be exposed to graphic content related to operational physical injuries.
- Make one- to two-day trips within Canada or abroad and work/travel outside core business hours, at least twice a year.
- Occasionally (once a year) participate to two- to three-weeks long field trials, within Canada or abroad.
