Successful completion of a recognized post-secondary program in a field relevant to the duties of the position or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
Experience providing technical support for field and/or laboratory projects in one or more of the following areas: fish population, fish stock assessment, fish habitat, fisheries productivity, marine mammals, ecosystem science, biodiversity science.
*Note: “Fish” includes finfish and invertebrates and “aquatic” includes marine and freshwater.
Experience in the collection, and management of scientific data.
Experience in the use of computer software for data management and treatment, and preparation of graphical output.
Experience providing technical support to fish population science, fish stock assessment, fish habitat science, or fisheries productivity science projects.
Experience providing technical support to marine mammal science projects.
Experience providing technical support to mammal or bird stock assessments.
Experience conducting surveys by transects for species abundance estimation.
Experience providing technical support to biodiversity science or conservation biology projects.
Experience conducting scientific work:
a) in open waters from medium to large vessels.
b) from small vessels in fresh or coastal waters
c) from small aircraft and helicopters
d) in remote areas
e) in the Arctic
Experience in activities related to fieldwork (e.g., operating remote field camps; operating all-terrain vehicles; operating, trailering and launching small boats; working in harsh and remote environments).
Experience with remote sensing, autonomous survey technologies (e.g. gliders, drones, surface and underwater autonomous vehicles, buoys).
Experience with underwater passive or active acoustic devices.
Experience with other modern sampling/data collection and/or dissemination technologies (e.g. archival tags, telemetry).
Experience with real-time data delivery systems (buoy-mounted satellite communications systems, cabled ocean observatories).
Experience using, maintaining, and troubleshooting specialized aquatic science field and/or laboratory equipment.
Experience in catching and handling marine mammals.
Experience in using statistical software to analyze data.
Experience in developing or using relational databases.
Experience working with the marine or fishing industry, indigenous organizations, or stakeholder groups.
Lab experience with methods for age determination.
Lab experience preparing samples for stable isotope analysis.
Lab Experience extracting and quantifying hormones using RIA or ELISA.
Experience in the interpretation of aerial photographs for wildlife surveys.
Have completed or accept to successfully complete a course on «Experimental Fish» in accordance with certification by the Animal Welfare Committee of the Maurice Lamontagne Institute, Fisheries and Oceans Canada;
Have completed or accept to successfully complete a course to obtain a permit for detaining and acquiring fire arms;
Accept and be capable of using fire arms with the aim of killing marine mammals as part of sampling programs;
Accept and have the capacity to work aboard various platforms including helicopters, small planes, and boats of various sizes as required;
Have completed or accept to successfully complete training in the theory and practical aspects of driving heavy vehicles and towing « Program of conformity for drivers of Fisheries and Oceans Canada »

Medical fitness in accordance with certification by Health Canada;
Accept to travel and to work outside of normal working hours;
Accept and be able to work at sea or in the field in remote or isolated environments and under primitive conditions (e.g. camping) for periods of up to 6 weeks consecutive weeks, and for periods that could exceed 10 weeks per year.
Accept or be qualified to operate small vessels in accordance with certification by Transport Canada or accept to follow and succeed in acquiring this certificate
