Duties

Plan, organize and undertake assigned scientific projects to enhance knowledge, concepts and methodologies in physical or environmental science.
Provide scientific information, advice and recommendations within their area of expertise to managers, researchers, colleagues and external clients on issues related to the conduct of scientific projects and investigations, their results, and the methodologies employed.
Participate in the development of new instrumentation, methods, technology and quality control procedures and protocols for the collection and analysis of scientific data.
Take part in short-term projects such as multidisciplinary at-sea, field, and laboratory studies and occasionally lead them.
Maintain custody and safekeeping of scientific samples, sample archives, research equipment and instrumentation, and scientific data and information in hard-copy and electronic format.
Write scientific papers and reports within a specialized area of physical or environmental science, or contribute to their writing, and as a team member, contribute to peer reviews of scientific manuscripts.
Review and evaluate new findings and advances in physical or environmental sciences to assess their relevance for the improvement of current practices with respect to the collection, management, statistical analysis, and interpretation of data.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with a specialization in physics, mathematics, engineering, or any other pertinent field in physical sciences.

Degree equivalency

A minimal one year work experience in one of the physical sciences fields, or 2 years of completed graduate studies in ocean sciences, or a diploma in graduate studies in ocean sciences.

Experience in writing scientific reports or publications.

Experience in data processing.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

2nd or 3rd cycle diploma in physical oceanography.
2nd or 3rd cycle diploma in engineering with digital signal processing (e.g. electrical
engineering, engineering physics).

Degree equivalency

Experience with relational database structure (Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL) and database tools (SQL, plSQL).

Experience with data and metadata management.

Experience in programming with R.

Experience in programming with Python.

Experience in data processing and analysis in formats such as NetCDF, HDF, Ascii, Grib.

Experience in processing and analysis of three-dimensional numerical model outputs.

Experience in processing and analysis of Ephemerides data (tides).

Experience with the collection and analysis of various oceanographic data.

Experience with the conduct of passive or active underwater acoustics work.

Experience in digital signal processing.

Overtime may be required in the evenings or on weekends.

Reliability Status security clearance - May be required to hold a valid driver’s licence.

Mandatory medical examination.

Much of the work is performed in a climate-controlled office environment at a desk or workstation. There is an occasional requirement to travel to national headquarters and other regions for meetings and to national/international venues when attending conferences and representing the department.

Participation in at-sea, field, and laboratory studies may require periods of greater physical effort when climbing ship’s ladders, deploying and retrieving instrumentation, traversing rough terrain carrying equipment and samples, while exposed to inclement weather, and caustic and toxic chemicals.
