Intent of the process

A pool of candidates will be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the EN-ENG-04 group and level within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential, or Bilingual), linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), security requirements (Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

A degree from a recognized university in mining engineering, petroleum engineering, civil engineering or geological engineering, or other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada.

– A minimum of five years of professional experience in rock mechanics, in the mining industry and/or oil and gas industry, either with specialized consulting firms, within research centres and/or technical universities with a speciality in geomechanics and/or rock engineering
̶̶– Within the last five years, experience in conducting technical surveys in the field, scientific research work and rock testing in a laboratory, as well as field instrumentation and monitoring, including in-situ stress measurements, as applied to mining and/or oil and gas industries;
– Experience in planning, organizing and coordinating research projects;
– Experience in supervising and training technical staff;
– Experience in preparing detailed reports, scientific papers, and or publications relevant to the duties of the position.

Information on language requirements

- Of mining methods and mine technologies used in the Canadian mining industry;
- Of rock mechanics and rock dynamics principles, testing methods and monitoring techniques used for both field and laboratory work;
- Of ground support methods in current use in Canadian mines;
- Of methods of techniques used to describe rock masses, to estimate rock mass quality, to assess tunnels and underground excavations stability, and advantages and limitations of these methods, techniques;
- Of codes and standards and regulations which apply to the Canadian mining industry regarding health and safety conditions.

- Communicate effectively in writing;
- Communicate effectively orally;
- Plan, organize, and deliver research studies carried out in both the field and the laboratory;
- Work under minimal supervision to meet project objectives.
- Evaluate rock mass stability using new and/or existing monitoring techniques to improve mine safety;

- Sound judgement
- Tact and respect when dealing with personnel, clients and partners of NRCan

The following may be applied / assessed at a later date (may be needed for the job)

- Masters or Ph.D. degree from a recognized university in engineering or applied science in the fields of mining engineering, geological engineering, rock mechanics, or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position;

Degree equivalency

-Recent experience, within the last five years, with scientific work such as rock testing in laboratory, field instrumentation and monitoring, including in-situ stress measurements, as applied to Canadian mining, in hard and soft rocks;

- Experience in rock engineering and mine design, in geomechanical or geotechnical engineering, as it pertains to Canadian mining operations in hard and soft rocks.
