Duties

Director, General Coastal Region:
Is accountable for providing, in the coastal region, professional scientific and managerial leadership to the region's network of Science Centres; leading the delivery of primary science in food science, botany; zoology; and the animal, crop and soil sciences, and the application of science in such specialties as biodiversity; ensuring the horizontal (AAFC-wide) alignment and coherence of research through priority-setting, inter- and intra-program coordination, and strategic resource allocation; ensuring that the Branch's focus on a continuum of research, development and technology transfer is reflected in the planning and delivery of activities; and fostering the transfer of new technologies to the agricultural sector, to ensure the optimal return on the Department's investment in scientific knowledge and technology; and fostering/maintaining effective working relationships with all stakeholders including the provinces, universities, producers' associations and private sector companies.

Education:

Graduation with a degree* from a recognized post-secondary institution** in a science field related to the duties of the position.

*Degree: Unless it is otherwise specified (e.g., Master's degree), the term "degree" refers to a baccalaureate as established by educational authorities.
**Recognized post-secondary institution: Public or private institution that has been given authority to grant degrees, diplomas, and other credentials by a public or private act of a provincial/territorial legislature or through a government-mandated quality assurance mechanism. For greater certainty, also included are institutions authorized to grant specific academic credentials for specific academic programs.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

• Experience in developing, implementing, directing and integrating programs, policies and strategies related to science and technology transfer.
• Experience in liaising and negotiating with representatives of other government departments/agencies, other levels of government, industries, universities/science partners and national and international private sectors.
• Experience in providing expert science advice to senior officials.
• Experience in managing large* human and financial resources.

*Large:

Asset Qualifications:

Education:

Master’s degree or doctorate/Ph. D. degree (preferred) from a recognized post-secondary institution in agricultural science or in a field related to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

• Experience in the management of scientific programs related to the agriculture and agri-food sector.
• Experience developing and sustaining research partnerships with industries and universities or science partners and private sectors.
