The successful candidate will assist the breeder and senior technician in conducting research in the laboratory, greenhouse, growth chamber and field. The duties include, but are not limited to:
• Identifying and selecting plants and seeds required for making hybrids, advancing breeding materials, and maintaining germplasm.
• Cataloguing, maintaining and updating plant and seed collections.
• Developing and maintaining pea hybrids, cultures and other genetic materials.
• Identifying diseases, weeds and insects that affect pulse crops in Western Canada.
• Making objective observations and recording data for use by the senior technician and breeder.
• Assisting with the planting, maintenance and harvest of breeding material in the field, greenhouse and growth chamber.
• Analyzing plant and grain samples for quality traits such as protein and starch content.
• Applying pesticides to control weeds and other pests in the field.
• Operating and maintaining equipment used by the breeding program.

Diploma in agriculture from a recognized post-secondary institution OR an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.

Experience with agricultural field-plot experiments.
Experience operating small-plot research machinery.
Experience producing plant hybrids using traditional plant-breeding methods.
Experience applying pesticides in the field using small-plot or field-scale equipment.
Experience maintaining a seed germplasm and storage system.
