Duties

Supervises and supports a large research operation including greenhouses, growth chambers and poly tunnel. Plans and implements services, allocates and coordinates work activities with scientific, engineering and other staff in the assigned area(s).

The work requires performing all or a comprehensive range of the following activities:
1. Plans on a daily and longer term basis the layout and allocation of greenhouse, growth chamber and poly tunnel space giving consideration to rotational use, or environmental needs of research crops, or maintenance and repairs/replacement of structures.
2. Supervises and manages the work unit’s human resources as well as oversees the work of contractors, term employees and students.
3. Provides support, assistance and advice to management, scientific and technical staff and/or clients. Participates in committees and working groups related to facility operations and activities.
4. Supervises or performs maintenance on greenhouse facilities and related equipment. In addition, maintain records of greenhouse/growth chamber usage, pesticide applications, chemicals used and report to greenhouse committee in a timely manner.
5. Consults scientists and/or technical staff to identify greenhouse, growth chamber operations or construction needs to develop plans for succeeding years.
6. Monitors and identifies biotic, abiotic and/or physical problems in greenhouse and/or growth chamber operations and discusses concerns with researchers and/or technical staff with experiments and projects.
7. Follows established federal government standards for procurement, coordinates in a timely manner the ordering of materials and supplies for greenhouse and growth chamber operations.

Degree equivalency

Experience in the management, operation, space management, and maintenance of a modern greenhouse facility.
Experience in Integrated Pest Management practices supporting the production of greenhouse crops.
Experience in the use of e-mail, word processing, and spreadsheet software applications.

Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in horticulture, greenhouse management, plant science, agriculture, or a field relevant to the position being staffed.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in horticulture, plant sciences, or a field relevant to the position being staffed.

Degree equivalency

Experience managing a modern greenhouse facility in an agricultural research environment.
Experience working with oilseed crops.
Experience in data collection and data entry related to greenhouse operations.
Experience supervising staff.

Knowledge of computer integrated greenhouse environmental controls and for growth cabinets.
Knowledge of Oilseeds crops and related research considerations for field crop species.
Knowledge of data collection and data entry for research purposes.
