Important messages

Transport Canada’s Defect Investigations group has a mandate under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act to investigate complaints relating to alleged manufacturing safety defects. Complaints are documented in a database and then reviewed by an experienced analyst. When warranted an investigation will be initiated to further research the problem. During the investigation process we work closely with consumers, dealers, forensic scientists, manufacturers and others to obtain a clear understanding of the problem and the potential risk to safety. At times the investigations may lead to safety recall campaigns or safety advisory publications. Further details can be found on our website at www.tc.gc.ca/recalls

Our Motor vehicle defect complaint analysts work in an office and laboratory/shop environment. They are front line employees who play an important role by documenting safety related complaints via inbound calls, from our online web form and emails. Analysts review each complaint and determine if they are within scope of our safety mandate. They are expected to maintain good consumer relations while educating consumers on vehicle safety issues, our mandate, policies and procedures.
