Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to staff one (1) term English Essential position in Edmonton, Alberta until March 31, 2019, with the possibility of an extension. A pool may be created to staff similar positions with various tenures (indeterminate, specified period, deployment, acting, acting extensions, assignment, secondment), and/or security status (reliability) within Environment and Climate Change Canada in Edmonton (Alberta) or Saskatoon (Saskatchewan).

Education:
ED1. Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
EX1. Recent* and significant** experience in organizing and conducting field-based avian ecology projects.
EX2. Recent* and significant** experience assembling, summarizing and managing ecological information or data.
EX3. Recent* and significant** experience in supervising field staff.
*« Recent experience » refers to experience normally acquired within the last five (5) years.
** « Significant experience » refers to the breadth and depth of experience and is defined as a combination of time spent doing the activity, as well as type of work handled related to the experience criteria. Such experience is normally acquired when having performed the duties over a period of at least two (2) years.

Education:
AED1. Advanced degree (Masters) from a recognized post-secondary institution in environmental, conservation, biological or zoological sciences, or similar environmental field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
AEX1. Experience in landbird survey work, such as point count or spot-mapping.
AEX2. Experience working with wildlife acoustic recording units and interpreting acoustic data, including use of sonogram analysis software.
AEX3. Experience using advanced quantitative analysis and advanced statistical software, such as SAS, STATA, or R.
AEX4. Experience in the operation and maintenance of off-road vehicles and trailers.

K1. Knowledge of the general biology, conservation and management of Western boreal landbirds.
K2. Knowledge of experimental design, study design, and sampling methods related to monitoring birds and habitats.

A2. Ability to organize and implement field logistics.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Valid driver’s license.
A Health Canada approved medical prior to appointment and at specified intervals is required for some positions.
Willing and able to travel to and work in remote locations.
Willing and able to work irregular hours and on weekends particularly during field season.
Willing and able to travel in boats or small aircraft (or helicopters and/or fixed-wing aircraft) as duties require.
Willing and able to perform field work, including bird surveys at dawn and dusk.
Willing and able to work in adverse environmental conditions (heat, cold, precipitation and/or biting insects).
Willing and able to work independently.
