The Senior Engineering Technician works with a multi-disciplinary team of Engineers and Biologists to primarily undertake engineering and bio-engineering projects that construct or restore salmon habitat features in order support the conservation and rebuilding of salmon and other fish stocks.
The position requires a highly skilled and experienced individual familiar with project planning, management and construction supervision, as well as numerous construction skills. Almost all work is conducted in partnership with other organizations; in particular First Nations communities and public stakeholders. Therefore, experience with this work environment, and possession of strong interpersonal skills will be important factors in the selection of the successful candidate.

The immediate intent of the resulting pool will be to staff one Senior Engineering Technician (EG-6) position in Kamloops BC. It is anticipated that appointment to this position will occur after April 1, 2018. The pool may also be used to staff similar future positions at various tenures within Fisheries and Oceans in the Pacific Region.

Education
• Successful completion of an accredited program of Civil Engineering Technology, or an acceptable combination of education, training or experience in surveying, drafting, water resources engineering/development, and small structure design.
Experience
• Experience using current Computer Aided Drafting and Design programs (e.g. AutoCAD Civil 3d, Micro Survey, etc.)
• Experience in reconnaissance surveys and feasibility studies including topographic surveys, data analysis and site selection to produce preliminary project designs
• Recent (within the last 3 years) experience in supervision and construction of earthworks, including at least 2 of the following: small and medium scale woodworking, concrete, metal working and plumbing/pipe fitting projects
• Experience with RTK GPS technology
• Experience in project management and working effectively in a multi-disciplinary work unit
Experience
• Experience in engaging and collaborating with Aboriginal groups, as well as at least one of the following three groups: government organizations, non-governmental organizations or public stakeholders
• Experience managing construction projects within British Columbia’s provincial legislation, regulations and policies governing water resources development and fisheries.

Operational Requirements
• Position is based in Kamloops, B.C., with travel required throughout the BC Interior
• Must be willing to travel
• Must be physically able to conduct difficult field work under adverse conditions, including very high summer and very low winter temperatures, and in difficult terrain, including streams, rocky and steep stream banks, heavy bush and deep snow.
• Must be willing to work variable hours outside regular normal working hours (weekends, statutory holidays) to meet field season objectives
• Must be willing to work overtime to meet operational needs in the field
