Duties

The Translation Bureau is a special operating agency of Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC). It supports the Government of Canada in its efforts to communicate with and serve Canadians in the two official languages.
It also plays a leadership role in standardizing the vocabulary used in various spheres of federal government activity and increasingly stands out in the Canadian language services industry as a leader in language technologies due to its richly innovative culture.

The selected candidates would be asked to translate and revise a variety of documents in diverse fields (legal, scientific and technical) from English to French or from French to English, from a number of departments and federal organizations; for example, The Department of Justice, the Supreme Court, Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Department of National Defence and Transport Canada.

Translation services are provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Some people may be required to work by rotational basis or to work shifts, during the day, evening and night, including weekends.

Intent of the process

The purpose of this selection process is to staff permanent positions (indeterminate) and temporary positions (term). This process could also be used to create a pool of partially qualified candidates that could be used to fill similar or identical positions with different durations (indeterminate, term, acting or deployment) in the Translation Bureau at Public Services and Procurement Canada.

EDUCATION

STREAM 1 - LEGAL TRANSLATOR (accepted combinations):
-Bachelor’s degree in translation and a law degree from a recognized university;
-Bachelor’s degree in translation and a Master’s degree in legal translation;
-Bachelor’s degree in translation and a certificate in law;
-Law degree and a Master’s degree in translation;
-Law degree and a Master’s degree in legal translation;
-Bachelor’s degree in translation and at least 3 years of experience in legal translation;
-Master’s degree in translation and at least 3 years of experience in legal translation; or
-Master’s degree in translation and a law certificate.

STREAM 2 - SCIENTIFIC TRANSLATOR (accepted combinations)
- Bachelor’s degree in translation and a post-secondary diploma in a scientific field
(chemistry, biology, ichthyology, medicine, physical sciences and mathematics, earth
sciences, atmospheric sciences, astronomy)
- Master’s degree in translation and a post-secondary diploma in a scientific field
(chemistry, biology, ichthyology, medicine, physical sciences and mathematics, earth
sciences, atmospheric sciences, astronomy)
-Bachelor’s or Masters degree in translation and at least 3 years of experience in translation in a scientific field

STREAM 3 - TECHNICAL TRANSLATOR (accepted combinations)
- Bachelor’s degree in translation and a post-secondary diploma in a technical field
(aeronautics, mechanical, electricity and electronics, civil engineering, legal metrology,
computer sciences, transportation, marine transportation, accounting)
- Master’s degree in translation and a post-secondary diploma in a technical field
(aeronautics, mechanical, electricity and electronics, civil engineering, legal metrology,
computer sciences, transportation, marine transportation, accounting)
-Bachelor’s or Masters degree in translation and at least 3 years of experience in translation in a technical field

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

STREAM 1 - LEGAL TRANSLATOR FROM ENGLISH TO FRENCH AND FROM FRENCH TO ENGLISH.
Approximately 3 years of experience in legal translation, from English to French or from French to English

Examples (non-exclusive list) of legal streams for which the Bureau provides translation services: commercial law and copyrights, tribunals and administrative law, constitutional law, criminal law, Indigenous and family law, tax law and civil law, maritime law and labour law, conventions, national and international agreements and contracts.

STREAM 2 - SCIENTIFIC TRANSLATOR FROM ENGLISH TO FRENCH AND FROM FRENCH TO ENGLISH.
Approximately 3 years of experience in translation, from English to French or from French to English, in a scientific field (chemistry, biology, ichthyology, medicine, physical sciences and mathematics, earth sciences, atmospheric sciences, astronomy)

STREAM 3 - TECHNICAL TRANSLATOR FROM ENGLISH TO FRENCH AND FROM FRENCH TO ENGLISH.
Approximately 3 years of experience in translation, from English to French or from French to English, in a technical field (aeronautical, mechanical, electrical and technological, civil engineering, legal metrology, computer sciences, transportation, marine transportation, accounting)

Translation services are provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Some people may be required to work by rotational basis during the day, evening and night, including weekends.

An interview may be administered.

An exam may be administered on different dates to applicants in each stream who have been screened-in.

You will need to provide proof of education credentials.
