The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is an independent arm's length agency that reports to Parliament through the President of the Queen's Privy Council. The organization aspires to be a modern world-class organization that evolves and adapts as it strives to influence changes that advance transportation safety. The TSB enjoys a strong and credible reputation in Canada and around the world.
The TSB is a small organization with approximately 220 employees and 5 Board Members. The organization operates in a decentralized manner through 10 locations across Canada. Employees work in a collegial and collaborative environment.
The intent of this process is to establish a pool of partially assessed candidates. Similar positions may be staffed through this process with various tenures, language profiles and/or requirements and security levels.

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, aeronautical engineering, geological engineering, naval architecture or some other engineering specialty relevant to the duties of the position.
OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:
Certification as a Professional Engineer in Canada or eligibility for certification as a professional engineer in Canada with specialization in an engineering specialty relevant to the position.
EXPERIENCE:
Recent* and significant** experience in managing physical, human and financial resources.
Recent* and significant** experience managing and supervising a professional group in a technical environment.
Significant** practical experience in engineering and failure analysis in at least one of the following areas of specialization: structures, material sciences, power plants, mechanical systems, electrical and electronic systems.
Significant** practical experience in engineering and failure analysis related to at least one of the following modes of transportation: aviation, marine, rail and pipeline.
Experience in conducting, planning and supervising scientific and engineering analyses to determine causal factors and safety deficiencies related to transportation occurrence investigations.
Experience with writing, reviewing and editing technical reports.
* Recent experience refers to experience acquired within the last 7 years
**Significant experience refers to a combination of breadth, depth and complexity of tasks that can normally be acquired in a period of 2 years of work in the field.

KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act (CTAISB) and its mandate.
Detailed knowledge of engineering and failure analysis principles and applications in at least one of the following specialized disciplines: structures, material sciences, power plants, mechanical systems, electrical and electronic systems.
ABILITIES:

Ability to plan, prioritize and direct multi-disciplinary engineering activities while meeting objectives and tight deadlines.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
A post-graduate degree (master or doctorate) or advanced courses in engineering or applied sciences.
Specialized accident investigation course from a recognized training provider.
EXPERIENCE:
Experience in the field of accident investigation.
Experience in engineering and failure analysis in two or more of the following specialized disciplines in aviation, marine, rail or pipeline modes of transportation: structures, material sciences, power plants, mechanical systems, electrical and electronic systems.
Experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Project management
• Occupational Health and Safety
• The use of multi-media techniques and technology to assist in accident investigation work; reconstruct and explain accident scenarios; and document and survey occurrence sites on land and underwater.

Possess a valid driver’s license in Canada.
Agree to deploy to accident sites where there may be exposure to disagreeable and difficult working conditions and to extreme climatic conditions.
Willingness to work with components which may have been contaminated with blood or human remains and willingness to be vaccinated against blood borne pathogens.
Agree to respond and travel on short notice during and after normal working hours and on statutory holidays.
Agree to travel within Canada and abroad, including travel by car, rail, ship and air.
Willingness to undergo TSB required training.
