Duties

Interns participate in research projects, facility inspections and assessments; assists with the analysis of problems in collection management facilities and the design of creative solutions; responds to basic client requests related to preventive conservation; participates in the preparation and delivery of material for seminars, workshops and conferences; drafts written reports and publications; assists with the technical review of applications for heritage funding; reviews relevant literature.

The objectives of the paid post-graduate internship program are:

•to provide a bridge between academic studies and professional practice to ensure that the heritage community has access to fully trained workers in the conservation field;
•to share CCI expertise and knowledge through professional development opportunities;
•to increase CCI capacity to serve the heritage community while providing professional development opportunities.

Intent of the process

The position will be staffed for a specified period. The start date will be April 3rd, 2018 until March 29, 2019. A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates resulting from this selection process may be created and may be used to fill the same or similar positions within the Canadian Conservation Institute.

EDUCATION (FOR BOTH POSITIONS)

The applicant must have recently* completed, a university degree or a minimum two (2) year college diploma from a recognized** post-secondary conservation, collections management, museum management or cultural resources management program.

* Recently is defined as within approximately the last 5 years.

** A "recognized" post-secondary institution is one that has provincial or territorial degree/diploma-granting status, or a university/college outside Canada of which the programs/degrees are accepted by a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE (FOR BOTH POSITIONS)

Experience in at least one of the following: A) facilities planning, B) collections assessment, C) building assessment or D) heritage conservation planning which may have been obtained through a combination of professional employment, academic studies, volunteer or extra curricular activities.

The following will be applied / assessed at a later date (essential for the job)

KNOWLEDGE (FOR BOTH POSITIONS)

Knowledge of conservation principles and methodologies for the conservation and preservation of heritage objects.
Knowledge of the techniques of assessing the condition and conservation needs of heritage objects and collections.

Knowledge of the materials and properties associated with one or more types of heritage objects.

Knowledge of the ethics of conservation.

Knowledge of the Canadian heritage community.

ABILITIES (FOR BOTH POSITIONS)

Ability to contribute to facility inspections and assessments relating to the conservation or preservation of at least one of the following: artifacts, collections or buildings

Ability to assist with the provision of technical advice, writing of technical reports, and provision of specialized documents to support the client decision making process

Ability to communicate orally.

Ability to communicate in writing.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in Risk Assessment applied to cultural property.

Experience in Preventive Conservation.

Experience in carrying out conservation research.

Knowledge of the mission and services of the Canadian Conservation Institute.

Knowledge in the use and application of collections management databases for the documentation of cultural material or built heritage.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Willingness and ability to travel within Canada which may involve some overtime.

Other current or future requirements of the organization for the proper functioning of the work unit or the organization.
