Duties

The Research Support Lead Hand (Irrigation) is responsible for: programming and operating the field irrigation system; making repairs and performing preventative maintenance; calculating irrigation schedules and coordinating irrigation cycles; designing, fabricating, installing and renovating new irrigation systems; and carrying out farm and research operation duties.

The Morden Research and Development Centre, located in Morden, Manitoba, is part of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's national network of 19 research centres. The Morden Research and Development Centre focuses on the development of technologies that enhance profitability and environment sustainability as well as contribute to the health and wellness of Canadians. Supported by a unique human nutrition platform, the centre is dedicated to the development of superior varieties of high quality and disease resistant cereals, oilseeds and pulse crops that minimize producer risks and enhance opportunities in sustainable crop systems.

The Morden Research and Development Centre is associated with two satellite locations: the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine and the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals.

The centre leads research in six areas:
• Cereal diseases
• Cereal germplasm and genomics
• Flax and Eastern Prairie Pulse crop germplasm
• Human nutrition, food health attributes, and functional foods
• Bioprospection from bioresources: cereals, pulses, and oilseeds
• Grain and grain products storage research.

Successful completion of secondary school or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.

Degree equivalency

1. Recent* and relevant** experience in operation of plot scale (harvesters, seeders, sprayers) and/or farm equipment (e.g. tractors, combine, farm trucks).
2. Recent* and relevant** experience installing, operating, and/or maintaining irrigation systems (e.g. in agriculture production/ landscape/turf/ golf course applications).
3. Recent* and relevant** experience working with field crops and weed species.
4. Experience in using MS Word, MS Outlook and MS Excel.

*Recent is defined as experience that was executed for approximately two years in the past five years.
**Relevant is defined as an experience gained at a commercial, research or institutional agricultural enterprise.

1. Possession of a valid Manitoba Pesticide Applicators Certificate for greenhouse OR field operations.
2. Pesticide Applicator’s License issued by Manitoba for field application.

Degree equivalency

3. Recent* and relevant** experience working in an agricultural research environment.
4. Experience in maintenance of linear, micro-sprinkler and/or trickle irrigation systems.
5. Experience in data collection and data entry for research purposes.
6. Experience in underground irrigation installations, including industry standard PVC pipe installations.
7. Experience using a variety of farm machinery and tools (e.g. electric pruners, forklifts, chainsaws, mowers or rotovators).

8. Ability to identify electrical and mechanical problems in irrigated systems.
9. Ability to monitor soil moisture status to confirm that adequate irrigation is applied to irrigated crops.
10. Ability to identify crop growth stages.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - - Ability and wiliness to control allergies through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and must not impinge on tasks to be performed.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust and noise).
- Ability and willingness to work overtime including evening, weekends and statutory holidays.
- Ability and willingness to work with chemicals and pesticides.
- Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 25kg).
- Ability and willingness to obtain a Pesticide Applicators License issued by the Manitoba Agriculture within eighteen months of appointment.
- Ability and willingness to obtain a Forklift Operator’s License issued by a provincially certified agency within one year of appointment.
