Duties

The Regional Mapping Geoscientist will lead or assist in the planning, development, conduct and delivery of geoscience projects in Nunavut. He/she will use scientific results from projects to provide advice on responsible mineral resource exploration and development and land use planning to government, industry, national and international clients and partners and other stakeholders such as community representatives. Duties will include:

• Plan and conduct field- and office-based geoscience activities relevant to understanding the regional geology and resource potential of the Precambrian terranes making up Nunavut. This includes managing all logistical aspects of field activities.

• Engage community and territorial decision-makers to plan and implement geoscience research and communication of geoscience results.

• Prepare and deliver a variety of maps, presentations and reports on geoscience results for government publications, scientific journals, conferences and plain language summaries.

• Build and maintain national and territorial scientific and capacity-building partnerships with academic, government and industry partners.

• Provide advice and recommendations, based on geoscience activities and results, to a variety of community, government, territorial, national and international clients and partners to improve their understanding of the Nunavut landmass in support of responsible resource development and land use planning.

A pool of (fully or partially qualified) candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at the PC-03 group and level within Natural Resources Canada with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential, or Bilingual), linguistic requirements (imperative and/or non-imperative) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability status or Secret clearance), various conditions of employment and for various locations.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in earth science, geophysics, physics, geology, geochemistry, chemistry or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

• Experience in planning, implementing and leading regional scale, field-mapping projects, including organization of field logistics, management of personnel and community engagement.
• Experience in producing a geological map using data integration techniques and technologies. Integrated data components may include structural, petrologic, tectonostratigraphic, geochemical, isotopic, geochronological, geophysical and remote sensing data (including air photo and satellite imagery).
• Experience in geoscience research having a focus on Precambrian and mineral-deposit geology
• Experience in production of geologic documents such as maps, reports, scientific presentations, and contributions to publications in scientific journals

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral (Ph.D.) OR master (M.Sc.) OR bachelor (B.Sc.; with manager-approved experience) degree from a recognized university with a specialization pertinent to the study of earth science, geology, geochemistry or geophysics or some other science relevant to the position.

Degree equivalency

• Experience working as a geoscientist within multi-jurisdictional, Federal – Provincial/Territorial teams
• Experience in using remotely sensed data (such as air photo and satellite imagery) and techniques to study geology and/or mineral deposits
• Experience in living and working in remote locations
• Experience in community and/or stakeholder engagement meetings or capacity building
• Experience in planning, implementing and leading regional-scale field mapping projects in remote Canadian locations
