Duties

Provide scientific and/or regulatory advice and recommendations. Plan, recommend, organize and deliver programs to assess human health issues and/or enforce compliance with standards regulations and provisions of the act and develop statutory regulations and standards.

Plan, design, conduct, co-ordinate and monitor theoretical studies, laboratory experiments and field investigations to evaluate risks and benefits in order to set priorities for action and recommend appropriate solutions.

Develop, evaluate and recommend strategic planning, including policy development, analysis. Implement and identify program opportunities emerging issues and constraints.

Conduct risk assessments and determine implications of results on existing guidelines, regulations, standards, policies and regulatory programs.

Conduct, develop and implement leading edge scientific methods, techniques, tools and systems for evaluating safety performance and efficiency of radiation measuring equipment or radiation emitting devices.

Review, evaluate new knowledge and developments in equipment technologies and applications to maintain awareness and provide Health Canada management with advice and assistance in development of decision reports.

Contribute to and prepare/draft discussion papers, briefing notes, question period notes, presentations and responses to ministerial, media and ATIP inquiries for review and approval by management. Represent the department on national and international committees.

Participate, coordinate and/or lead multidisciplinary project teams, working groups and committees involved in scientific research, regulatory program development and to respond to emerging issues. Develop and maintain a network of national and international professionals.

Interpret and analyze complex scientific and regulatory information, research and data in order to recommend and advise management on incorporation of principles, practices and regulations.

May participate in an operational role during training, exercises and emergencies.

Work environment

Successful candidates will be working in the Radiation Protection Bureau (RPB). Health Canada's Radiation Protection Bureau has a mandate to promote and protect the health of Canadians by assessing and managing the risks posed by radiation exposure in living, working and recreational environments. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work closely with a multidisciplinary group of scientists. Depending on the specific position, the successful candidate could be asked to perform the following duties.

Intent of the process

The immediate intent of this poster is to fill two positions - one English essential position for up to a four year term basis and one Bilingual Imperative CBC/CBC position on an indeterminate basis. All other vacancies are anticipatory at this time.

A pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level with various language requirements (English Essential, Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB or CBC/CBC), various security requirements, various conditions of employment as well as various tenures (acting, assignment/secondment, deployment, term and/or indeterminate) within Health Canada in the National Capital Region.

- Knowledge in risk calculation from radiological and/or nuclear contaminants for implementing or updating guidelines (drinking water as example), regulations, standards, policies and/or regulatory programs.
