Duties

The Canadian Agriculture Library (CAL) employs a dynamic group of professional and support staff from coast to coast working together to support the mandate and regulatory commitments of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The ideal candidate can easily adapt to new ways of working in a changing library environment. They are flexible when it comes to long distance supervision, videoconferencing, and working virtually. They are enthusiastic to advance virtual library concepts and capabilities. They value transparent collaboration and healthy work environment.

As part of the seven science-based departments who recently implemented the Federal Science Library (FSL) initiative, CAL offers a full-range of library services to AAFC and CFIA. The Team Lead, Library Information Services is responsible for planning, developing and managing the information services program for the West and Ottawa. The ideal candidate is well versed in developing and implementing outreach strategies that engage clients and stakeholders at all levels. They are able to understand client business environment and are agile in anticipating and addressing evolving information and research service requirements. They are also comfortable giving presentations at all levels within the organization.

This position reports to the Manager, Library Information Services and supervises a team of professional and support staff located across Western Canada and Ottawa.

Work environment

The Canadian Agriculture Library (CAL) is one of the largest federal government libraries. The modern headquarters Library is located in the National Capital Region, at the edge of the Central Experimental Farm, near the Baseline Road and Merivale Road intersection. The complex is equipped with a full gym and is conveniently located within walking distance to restaurants, shopping, banking, pharmacy and numerous other services.

Intent of the process

Immediate need: To staff one position on a full-time temporary basis (12 months with possibility of extension) in Ottawa, Ontario.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, and there is a temporary need, they may be considered for acting or assignment/secondment opportunities.

A pool of qualified candidates will be established and may be used for similar permanent and temporary employment for the location indicated for this process.

Graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a master’s degree in Library Science or in Library and Information Science; OR graduation from a recognized post-secondary institution with a Bachelor’s degree in Library Science, or in Library and Information Science, for which another Bachelor’s degree was a prerequisite

Degree equivalency

Experience in the delivery of library services with emphasis on research.
Experience managing people and financial resources.
Experience leading a team.
Experience in delivering presentations to audiences such as senior management or business clients.
Experience in developing outreach or training activities for the provision of library services.

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Experience in delivering library services to a scientific clientele.
Experience in delivering library services to a business clientele.
Experience in the delivery of library services with emphasis in research, analysis or synthesis of at least one of the following areas: Science and technology, or Business (defined as activities such as development of organizational policies, development of programs, delivery of programs, research, commerce, and trade), or Industry.
Experience in leading project teams.
Experience in managing information management services.
