Work environment

Kitchen Helpers with the Department of National Defence perform a variety of duties in an institutional kitchen/dining environment for daily meal service as well as special events which may include menu planning, food preparation, cooking, baking, presentation of food items, supervising kitchen staff and cleaning and maintaining kitchen equipment and tools. The work environment may require Kitchen Helpers to stand, crouch, kneel and/or bend; work in hot and cold environments; and lift/carry heavy items and requires the use of Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE) such as wearing safety footwear.

Intent of the process

A pool of qualified candidates may be established to staff similar positions on an indeterminate, term and/or acting basis.

Education:
• Successful completion of secondary school (High School Diploma) or GED or departmentally approved alternative.

Degree equivalency

Experience:
• Experience working in an institutional, commercial or industrial food service environment.

• Knowledge of food preparation and proper cleaning in the context of institutional food service operation.

Occupational Certification:

• Post-secondary certificate or diploma in studies relative to the position being staffed

Conditions of employment

Conditions of Employment:

• Willing and able to work shift work as required
• Willing and able to work overtime and/or weekends as required
• Lift and carry items weighing up to 22 kg in accordance with general safety practices as required
• Wear CSA approved safety footwear and other personal protective equipment as required
