Duties

Prepare, plant, maintain and harvest cereal and oilseed test plots in field and greenhouse research trials. Operate and transport a variety of field equipment including: 50 -100 HP tractors, mowers, cultivators, sprayers, grain cleaners, and small plot seeders and combines. Participate in controlled environmental studies and field-plot experiments to assess agronomic data such as heights, yield, test weight, thousand kernel counts and disease ratings. Collect, process and ship plant and grain samples to various research institutions in Western Canada.

Intent of the process

Immediate staffing need:
- Two Indeterminate Seasonal positions (May 1 - November 30)

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used for similar permanent and temporary employment for the location indicated for this process.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, and there is a temporary need, he/she may be considered for acting or assignment/secondment opportunities. The approval of his/her substantive supervisor will be required before acting/assignment/secondment is offered.

Experience operating agricultural/farm equipment.
Experience working with crops.
Experience cleaning, adjusting, and making minor repairs to a variety of tools and equipment.

Pesticide Applicator License.

Experience working in an agricultural research setting.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - Possession of a valid driver’s license.

Valid driver’s license.

Ability and willingness to obtain a pesticide applicator license.
Ability and willingness to work overtime, including evenings and weekends.
Ability and willingness to work under variable weather conditions.
Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 20kg).
Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise).
Ability and willingness to control allergies, through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and this must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
Ability and willing to work in a laboratory, greenhouse and/or field environments.
