Work environment

Looking for a new challenge or opportunity? You should consider joining the Labour Relations team of the Department of Justice Canada. The Department is a medium-sized department with around 5,000 employees. Roughly one half of departmental staff are lawyers. The other half is made up of a broad range of professionals, including paralegals, program managers, communications specialists, administrative services personnel, computer service professionals, and financial officers.

The Labour Relations team is currently composed of energetic, professional and dedicated individuals and is structured in virtual team across Canada. Those who join us will have the opportunity to work on both departmental projects as well as operational projects, which means that each Senior Labour Relations Advisor not only has his / her own client portfolio, but works also to develop ministerial initiatives. By joining our team, you can expect to find a dynamic group of experienced advisors who enjoy exchanges on a variety of interesting files.

Since the position to be filed is located in downtown Ottawa, the Human Resources Branch is easily accessible by public transit and close to all amenities. We want you in our team!

Intent of the process

The initial intent of this process is to staff one vacant indeteminate, CBC/CBC bilingual imperative position and a one year term BBB/BBB bilingual imperative position.

A pool of partially or fully qualified candidates resulting from this process will be established to fill similar positions with various tenures (temporary or permanent) and various bilingual imperative requirements only.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION:

Ed. Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in human resources management, labour or industrial relations, psychology, public or business administration, organizational development, education sciences, social sciences, sociology, or in any other field relevant to the work to be performed.

NOTE: Indeterminate incumbents of PE positions and of positions in the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions and in Indian Oil and Gas Canada that are equivalent to PE positions on October 1, 1999, who do not possess the education level prescribed above, are deemed to meet the minimum education standard based on their education, training and/or experience. They must be accepted as having met the minimum education standard whenever this standard is called for when staffing PE positions and positions in the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions and Indian Oil and Gas Canada that are equivalent to PE positions. This note also applies to persons appointed or deployed, for an indeterminate period, to PE positions after that date as the result of staffing transactions started before October 1, 1999. The positions in the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions and in Indian Oil and Gas Canada that are equivalent to PE positions are those that meet the Treasury Board definition for the PE occupational group.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE:

EX1. Significant* experience in providing strategic advice and guidance to management** on issues related to labour relations.
EX2. Experience in the creation and maintenance of effective relationships in collaboration with union representatives.
EX3. Experience in the interpretation of legislation and policies related to Labour Relations including collective agreements.
EX4. Experience in writing briefing notes, grievance replies or other labour relations documentation for management**

* Significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with a combination of the time (approximately of three (3) years) associated with having performed the functions and the type of work (scope, breadth and complexity) linked to the core responsibilities according to this essential qualification. Clear and specific examples must be provided by the candidate at the time of completing their application.

** Management is defined as Director’s level or above.
