Duties

Natural Resources Canada seeks a dynamic, creative, and resourceful team player to join the Canadian Wood Fibre Centre as a research scientist. The strategic aim of the position is the integration of tree, stand, and forest-level information to enable better interpretation and prediction of impacts of forest management on growth, wood attributes, and other forest values. You will conduct research using large and diverse datasets including data obtained from forest inventories, remote sensing, growth and yield, and wood fibre assessment. Based on an understanding of ecological factors driving stand development, your research will provide tools to support sustainable forest management decisions.

Work environment

The Canadian Wood Fibre Centre (CWFC) is a science organization dispersed by design comprising researchers located in Canadian Forest Service (CFS) centres across the country whose mission is to provide sustainable wood fibre solutions to Canada’s forest sector. Based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, at the Great Lakes Forestry Centre, you will join a collaborative team integrated with the national research programs of both the CFS and FPInnovations, and strongly oriented to the needs forest sector stakeholders. Sault Ste. Marie is situated on the St. Mary’s River between Lakes Superior and Huron within easy reach of expansive forests transitioning from Great-Lakes St. Lawrence to Boreal forest regions. A haven for lovers of the outdoors, the community is surrounded by freshwater lakes, rivers and streams.

Intent of the process

OUR IMMEDIATE NEED IS TO STAFF A BILINGUAL NON-IMPERATIVE (BBB/BBB) POSITION ON AN INDETERMINATE BASIS IN SAULT STE MARIE, ONTARIO.

A pool of partially or fully qualified candidates may be established through this process to fill research positions within Natural Resources Canada for varying tenures (determinate or indeterminate), with various language and bilingual profile requirements, (English or French Essential, English essential, French essential, or bilingual imperative and non-imperative; BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), and varying conditions of employment and work sites.

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural sciences related to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Being the author of scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals and of other written/oral communications (e.g. reports, books or book chapters, oral presentations) based on scientific research to which the candidate contributed. Note: the nature and extent of productivity may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed.

Experience designing field experiments.
Experience in the analysis and interpretation of large and complex datasets.
Experience applying advanced biometrics in one of the following areas: spatial analysis; silviculture; growth and yield; wood quality analysis; enhanced forest inventory; decision-support systems.

Experience with using and/or developing enhanced forest inventories (e.g. LiDAR-based inventories).
