Duties

The incumbent will be involved in providing scientific knowledge, data, information, advice and recommendations to research scientists and resource managers within the Department and to other federal, provincial, and municipal regulatory agencies and private and NGO partners related to management of aquatic invasive species, with emphasis on shipping vectors.

• Planning logistics, identifying, organizing and preparing equipment and instrumentation, and providing technical support for field and laboratory scientific studies and projects within a specialized field of aquatic science.

• Collecting, processing, validating and analyzing field/laboratory or survey samples/data, providing technical support and advice, and the analysis of results for inclusion in project reports and scientific manuscripts.

• Operating, testing, calibrating and maintaining specialized technical instrumentation and equipment, techniques and methodologies for the conduct of field and laboratory studies to meet project objectives.

• Maintaining databases, validating, inputting and manipulating data, and utilizing a variety of software applications for statistical and preliminary data analyses and the production of summary reports.

• Serving as technician-in-charge of assigned field, laboratory or at-sea scientific projects and initiatives.

• Participating in the planning and administration of proposed projects and the projected utilization of unit resources, the identification and procurement of goods and services, and the preparation of reports and scientific manuscripts.

• Providing technical advice and information to managers, colleagues, stakeholders and collaborators, and special interest groups respecting data quality and products, equipment and methodologies, validation of data, and project/survey goals and objectives.

Intent of the process

This is a full-time indeterminate position. The anticipated number of position(s) that may be staffed with this advertised process is one (1); however, a pool of qualified candidates will be established through this staffing process and may be used to staff similar positions with different tenures in Burlington ON, Winnipeg MB, or Sault Ste. Marie ON.

Degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural or applied science with acceptable specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

• Experience leading field or laboratory projects
• Experience with collection, enumeration, and identification of aquatic lower trophic level taxa (e.g., zooplankton)
• Experience operating, maintaining and troubleshooting specialized field or laboratory technical equipment (e.g., deployment of aquatic monitoring equipment and sensors)
• Experience in data input, quality control and statistical analysis
• Experience with production of scientific journal publications or technical reports

Small Vessel Operator Proficiency Training
Pleasure Craft Operator Card
Marine Emergency Duty Training – A1 or A3 Level
VHF Operators Certificate
Valid CPR and First Aid certificates

Experience operating, trailering and launching small vessels
Experience conducting scientific work at-sea on large vessels

Willingness to work outdoors under all weather conditions
Willingness and ability to participate in surveys aboard research vessels
Willingness and ability to work overtime, often on short notice
Willingness and ability to work in confined spaces
Willingness and ability to climb ladders and work at heights
Willingness and ability to work in harsh field conditions (e.g. Hot, humid and noisy environments while wearing full PPE, hard hat, hearing protection, etc.)
Willingness and ability to travel within Canada and internationally, for extended periods
Willingness and ability to engage in moderately strenuous physical activity and lift/lower moderately heavy equipment (18-25 kg)
Valid Health Canada medical certificate
