Work environment

The Policy Officer Recruitment Programme (PORP) is a three-year development programme designed to recruit and develop talented individuals to meet the unique demands of the defence policy environment and become well-rounded public servants. Training is carried out through in-house learning opportunities, mentoring, and participation in special projects as well as classroom and on-line courses.

Candidates selected for a PORP position are offered an indeterminate position with the Department of National Defence in Ottawa.

Intent of the process

The intent of the process is to staff five (5) positions in the PORP on a indeterminate basis, with a linguistic profile of Bilingual Imperative BBB/BBB or Bilingual non-imperative BBB/BBB.

A pool of partially or fully qualified candidates may be established and used to staff similar positions with various tenures in the Department of National Defence (DND), with various linguistic profiles and security profiles. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens residing in Canada or abroad.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

EDUCATION

ED1: Graduation with a Master's degree in history, political science, international affairs, public administration, law, sociology, economics or other security and defence related disciplines from a recognized university.

Candidates currently completing a Master's degree will be considered. They must demonstrate they are able to complete all the requirements of their current studies program to obtain their Master's degree by 30 June 2018.

Candidates must have an acceptable specialization in economics, sociology or statistics.

Note: Candidates must demonstrate their specialization in economics, sociology or statistics by:
- Indicating that they have taken at least one university course in one of these subject areas; or
- Describing a combination of education, training and/or experience in one of these subject areas.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

EX1: Experience researching, analyzing and writing on subjects related to security and defence, international affairs or public policy.

Conditions of employment

- A Reliability Status; a Secret Security Clearance; a Secret Security Clearance, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret Security Clearance; OR a Top Secret Security Clearance (position dependant).
- Take and subscribe to the oath or solemn affirmation (for individuals appointed from outside the Public Service only).
- The ability and willingness to work overtime frequently and on short notice.
