The TSB was created as an independent agency due to the importance of impartiality in the conduct of investigations. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is an independent arm's length agency that reports to Parliament through the President of the Queen's Privy Council. The organization aspires to be a modern world-class organization that evolves and adapts as it strives to influence changes that advance transportation safety. The TSB enjoys a strong and credible reputation in Canada and around the world.
The TSB is a small organization with approximately 220 employees and 5 Board Members. The organization operates in a decentralized manner through 10 locations across Canada. Employees work in a collegial and collaborative environment.
The intent of this process is to establish a pool of partially assessed candidates. Similar positions may be staffed through this process with various tenures, language profiles and/or requirements and security requirements.

Post-secondary school diploma from an acceptable college or equivalent qualifications in one of the following fields of study: materials science technology, mechanical engineering technology, or other specialty relevant to the duties of the position.
Significant* practical experience in preparing samples, performing laboratory tests and documenting finding for the analysis of materials, failures, and metallurgy of mechanical systems.
Significant* practical experience in performing maintenance and repairs of equipment in materials / physics laboratory or in an organization conducting activities relevant to the position.
Significant* practical experience in using computer assisted design, manufacturing and machining equipment.
Practical experience in three (3) of the following fields: nondestructive testing techniques, material and component manufacturing, welding techniques, and material characterization.
* Significant practical experience refers to an acceptable combination of breath, depth, complexity of tasks that can normally be acquired by full-time employment in the field of work over a period of three (3) years.

Knowledge of Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act and its mandate.
Knowledge of principles and practices for the testing of physical and mechanical properties of materials.
Knowledge of laboratory equipment including but not limited to scanning electron microscope, metallographic microscopes, tensile tester, hardness testers, Charpy impact tester and fumehood.
Knowledge of failure analysis.
Knowledge of safety practices for handling and storing chemicals.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Ability to prioritize work assignments to meet objectives.
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
Ability to develop solutions to technical problems or issues.
Ability to read schematics and drawings.
Ability to design and fabricate fixtures/holders for sample testing.

Successful completion of a degree from an acceptable university in at least one of the following fields of study: materials or other specialty relevant to the duties of the position.
Specialized accident investigation courses from a recognized training provider.
Experience in accident investigation for a mode of transportation.
Experience with using test instrumentation systems including analogue transducers, digital data acquisitions systems and proper data acquisition techniques.

Possess a valid driver’s license in Canada.
Agree to deploy to accident sites where there may be exposure to difficult working conditions and to extreme climactic conditions.

Agree to travel within Canada and abroad, including travel by car, rail, ship, and air.
Willingness to undergo TSB required training.
