Duties

The position, located at the Canadian Centre for Agri-Food Research in Health and Medicine situated in the city of Winnipeg, Manitoba, requires scientific innovation and leadership in the area of nutrigenomics and metabolomics. The successful candidate will develop and lead a research program on enhancing the levels of well-established bioactive molecules in major Canadian crops, resulting in crops with improved health attributes without altering other characteristics. The candidate will collaborate with health researchers whose research on pre-clinical/clinical studies has identified molecules with proven health benefits. The successful candidate will also collaborate with plant breeders to create these modified crops. Lastly, the scientist will work as part of a multidisciplinary team in collaboration with chemists to characterize extracts from the modified plants, and health researchers to carry out preclinical/clinical assessments of the plant extracts. The scientist will also work with stakeholders from academia, government, and industry, applying their expertise to help resolve challenges associated with nutrigenomics and plant quality improvement.

The researcher is expected to manage multiple projects in a multidisciplinary setting requiring collaboration with other scientific teams. The researcher will be expected to seek internal and external funding and collaborators to support the research program and to effectively manage resources to achieve the desired outcomes. The researcher will directly supervise staff, and may mentor and train post-doctoral fellows and graduate students.

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in the field of plant sciences.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please be advised that if you were educated outside of Canada, you must have your certificates and/or diplomas assessed against Canadian education standards. You are encouraged to begin this process as soon as possible.

Degree equivalency

Postdoctoral experience in the field of plant sciences, in genomics or other relevant discipline.

Recent* experience in conducting research in genomics/metabolomics and plant quality improvement.

Experience with novel metabolite structure determination and/or metobolomics.

Experience with metabolite isolation from complex plant systems.

Documented scientific productivity/recognition in the form of authorship/editorship of research results in the area of plant physiology and plant metabolism, in recognized journals and/or published reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from scientific research.

* Recent is defined as having performed relevant duties within the past five years.
