Intent of the process

To fill one position in Burlington,Ontario. Education:

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of the natural sciences related to the duties of the position.

Productivity and Recognition:

Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES) (Revised October 1, 1999).

Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:

•Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
•Operational research and scientific analysis;
•Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

• A minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral experience in conceiving, planning and conducting original research to evaluate the impacts of human activities on biogeochemistry (in particular nutrients), water quality and primary production of streams or rivers
• Experience in the application of advanced statistical techniques to the study of river and watershed ecology.
• Significant experience (at least 4 manuscripts and first author of approximately half) in the publication of peer-reviewed articles in the field of aquatic biogeochemistry (particularly nutrients) or biological production as it relates to streams and rivers.

Knowledge

• Knowledge of a watershed-based approaches to the study of streams and rivers, particularly as it applies to the delivery, transport, fate and effects of nutrients.
• Knowledge of design methodologies for conducting research on nutrient dynamics and biological production to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of nutrients in aquatic ecosystems.
• Knowledge of univariate, multivariate and modeling methods used in aquatic ecology.

Asset Experience:

• Experience in mining of large-scale datasets to produce integrated water quality information.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary research teams or programs to assess freshwater quality and ecosystem health.
• Experience in supervising technical staff or graduate or undergraduate students
• Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and the interface of GIS software and statistical software packages to describe and predict water quality and ecological conditions of aquatic systems.
