Duties

The Existing Substances Risk Assessment Bureau of the Safe Environments Directorate conducts scientific activities aimed at assessing priority substances under Canada’s Chemicals Management plan. This position offers the candidate a challenging opportunity to apply new methods and approaches for assessing chemical hazards to human health as well as further develop expertise in risk assessment to support decision-making under the Chemicals Management Program. The work also contributes to international initiatives in the field of hazard methodology, risk assessment and chemical prioritization.

Intent of the process

Anticipatory staffing. Applicants should be aware that a pool of qualified or partially assessed candidates may be established and may be used to staff similar positions at this group and level with various security requirements, various linguistic requirements (English Essential, Bilingual imperative BBB/BBB or Bilingual imperative CBC/CBC), various conditions of employment, as well as various tenures (acting, assignment/secondment, deployment, term and/or indeterminate) within Health Canada in the National Capital Region.

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the position, such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science, epidemiology or toxicology.

Degree equivalency

Significant experience* in the evaluation of information relevant to the assessment of hazard to the general population or environment from chemicals in the environment.
Significant experience* in the preparation of critical scientific reviews on the human health effects of chemical substances.
Experience providing advice and recommendations to senior management** pertaining to scientific or regulatory issues.
Experience in the use, application or development of tools or models to assess the hazard to human health from chemical substances.
Experience in developing and maintaining relationships with stakeholders including Government, industry, national or international organizations.

Significant experience* is defined as experience that would normally be acquired over a minimum of 3 years.

Senior management** is defined as Manager, Director and above.

Post-graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field relevant to the position, such as chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science, toxicology or epidemiology.

Degree equivalency

Significant experience* in development or application of computational models in support of risk characterization of chemicals
Experience conducting peer reviews and overseeing the work of junior team members.
Experience preparing scientific training materials and delivering training sessions to a scientific audience.

Significant experience* is defined as experience that would normally be acquired over a minimum period of 3 years.
