Important messages

Screening for the OCC training positions occurs through testing. CritiCall is a computer program specifically designed to test the critical knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for success in the high‐stress dispatch environment.

Candidates who are qualified at the TCO-01 level and who are selected for the Telecommunications Operator Training Program will be appointed to a determinate (term) appointment at the TCO-01 group and level.

The Training Program is comprised of in-class training followed by field coaching. The duration of the training program varies according to the location of the position.

Only the TCO-01 Trainees who successfully complete the training program will be placed in a pool of qualified TCO-02 which may be used to appoint determinately (term) or indeterminately (permanent) at the TCO-02 group and level.

Work environment

Telecommunications Operators provide a critical service within the RCMP that support both public and police officer safety through the provision of information and assistance. Telecommunications Operators work in Communications Centres that operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Telecommunications Operators perform a variety of duties which include the monitoring of police resources and systems with computer aided dispatch and monitoring systems. In addition, Telecommunications Operators respond to public requests for police assistance. In many instances,Telecommunications Operators are the first point of contact with people who call the RCMP.

*These qualifications will be assessed using the software, CritiCall. Each qualification is directly linked to a test module in CritiCall and applicants must meet the established pass-mark of each test module to continue in the selection process. If you fail one of more of the test modules, there is a 90 day waiting period before you can rewrite the test. Applicants must re-apply if they fail the selection process in order to be retested

Ability and willingness to travel for mandatory operational training

Ability and willingness to work on short notice and overtime to meet operational needs
Exposure to emotionally charged clients and incidents which may be traumatic, violent and disturbing

Meets and maintains the medical profile standards established for the position

Meets and maintains any additional medical requirements for isolated posts, in accordance with Treasury Board policy and definitions of locations

Work in a confined or restrictive workspace, wear a headset, and exposure to multiple computer screens, and noise disturbances for extended periods of time

8. 10. The successful candidate will be required to provide original documentation of proof of Canadian Citizenship prior to appointment. The following documents will be accepted as proof: Provincial or territorial birth certificate; Naturalization certificates (issued prior to Jan. 1, 1947); Registration of Birth Abroad certificates (issued between Jan. 1, 1947 and Feb. 14, 1977); Certificates of Retention; Citizenship certificates.

11. This process involves a security interview and background investigation covering a minimum of your last 5 years of history including credit and financial verification. A criminal record check will be completed. Substance abuse is a factor that will be assessed.
