Duties

The Canadian Hydrographic Service performs hydrographic surveys of Canada’s waterways both in inland waters and on all 3 coasts.

Under the direction of an Engineering Project Supervisor of Ship’s Officer, Operations Support Technicians assist in the execution of hydrographic surveys through the operation of small scientific vessels, called hydrographic survey launches. Operations Support Technicians perform various functions including hydrographic survey launch maintenance and husbandry, assisting with survey logistics and takes charge of operating a survey or other small crafts for various hydrographic and multi-disciplinary science programs from both shore-based and ship-based operational locations. Operations Support Technicians also assist in the maintenance of vessel and other equipment inventories, loading, stowing, securing and discharging of cargo and hydrographic supplies and through the delivery of equipment and supplies ashore.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is responsible for policies and programs in support of Canada's economic, ecological and scientific interests in oceans and inland waters; for the conservation and sustainable utilization of Canada's fisheries resources in marine and inland waters; for leading and facilitating federal policies and programs on oceans; and for safe, effective and environmentally sound marine services responsive to the needs of Canadians in a global economy.

Intent of the process

This is a full-time indeterminate position. The anticipated number of position(s) that may be staffed with this advertised process is one (1); however, a pool of qualified candidates will be established through this staffing process and may be used to staff similar positions with different tenures.

Marine Emergency Duties (MED) A1 – Basic Safety

ROC-MC - Radio Operator's Certificate - Maritime Commercial

Significant* experience operating or crewing aboard commercial craft
* Significant: Refers to the depth and breadth of experience that is normally associated with the full time performance of duties and for a period of approximately one (1) year, accumulated time.

Experience performing vessel maintenance and simple repairs to engines or electric motors aboard commercial craft

Experience in light truck operations and in the operation of hauling trailers (At least 1 year accumulated time).

Experience in maintenance of commercial craft equipment inventory. This may include loading, stowing, securing and discharging of cargo and supplies, and in delivering equipment and stores ashore.

Experience in using Microsoft Office computer software

Diploma in a Marine-related field from an approved post-secondary institution

Willing and able to work away from home and/or in isolated areas for extended periods of time.
