Intent of the process

The immediate need is to staff 1 indeterminate English or French essential position in Ottawa, ON. A pool of qualified candidates may be created and may be used to staff similar positions within Environment and Climate Change Canada, with various tenures, language requirements and profiles, and conditions of employment.

EDUCATION

Graduation with a degree from a post-secondary institution with specialization in the field of biochemistry, biology, chemistry or in a subject area related to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE

Experience in the application and validation of chemical and instrumental methods for the separation and analysis of environmental contaminants in various biological matrices.

Experience in the application and validation of biochemical and instrumental methods for the analysis of biomarkers in various biological matrices.

Experience in the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of liquid chromatographs equipped with various detection systems (e.g. mass spectrometry, UV-Vis, fluorescence).

Experience in the application of a quality assurance and quality control procedures in chemical and biochemical analyses as required by the CALA- ISO 17025 (Canadian Association for Laboratory Accreditation).

Experience in the handling of sensitive specimens, for the extraction of biomolecules and environmental contaminants.

Experience in Empower and Analyst 1.6 software used to operate LC (liquid chromatograph).

Experience in using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), more specifically, Element from Promium.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of theories and practices of analytical chemistry and biochemistry for application in wildlife toxicology.

Knowledge of extraction techniques and instrumental analytical techniques such as Spectrophotometry, Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) coupled to a UV/Vis, fluorescence or a Mass Spectrometer (MS) Detector, as well as immunoassay (EIA) techniques.

Knowledge of quality assurance and quality control principles and procedures used in CALA accredited laboratories – ISO 17025.

Knowledge of laboratory health and safety measures associated to lab work.

ABILITIES

Ability to efficiently plan and organize laboratory activities.

Ability to analyse and interpret complex data.

Ability to communicate effectively orally.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing.
