Intent of the process

The intent of this process is to create a pool of qualified candidates. The pool may be used to fill this and similar positions on an indeterminate, term, acting, or an assignment basis. The current requirement is four positions: 2 PC-02 and 2 PC-03.

Stream 1
PC-02
Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, with acceptable specialization in physics, geology, chemistry, computational science, software engineering or some other science relevant to the position. Note: The courses for the specialization must be acceptable and must have been taken at a recognized post-secondary institution, but not necessarily within a degree program in the required specialization.

PC-03
Graduation with a post graduate Degree in Science or Engineering from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position or a combination of an acceptable specialization bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years’ experience.

Stream 2
PC-02/PC-03
Graduation with a post graduate Degree in Physical Oceanography from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in ocean circulation modeling.

Experience working in Physical, Chemical or Biological Oceanography; Meteorology; Aquaculture, Computational Science or other relevant Sciences and engineering

Experience in analyzing spatially or temporally variable oceanographic, meteorological, environmental, aquaculture or engineering data using computer programming or scripting languages (i.e. SQL, C++, Python, Fortran, Matlab, IDL, or R, etc.).
-PC-02 at least 2 years experience.
-PC-03 at least 5 years experience.

Experience in organizing and undertaking assigned scientific or engineering research projects.

Streams 1 and 2: PC-03 only
Experience in managing scientific research projects and/or teams (at least 2 years direct experience).

Experience in implementing, improving and applying ocean circulation models (i.e. FVCOM and/or NEMO) to research problems

Asset Qualifications

All streams
Experience in scientific software development, computer programming, testing and debugging in support of scientific activities such as data analysis, data archival/access, data presentation, GIS, environmental modeling or model data assimilation.

Experience in signal processing analysis (time series data).

Experience in analyzing large data sets.

Experience in conducting multi-disciplinary studies in science, engineering or other relevant fields.

Experience working in a Unix/Linux computing environment

Experience in publishing research results in scientific journals, technical reports, publications or scientific manuscripts.

Experience in verifying ocean circulation models with in situ or remotely sensed data (can include but not limited to satellite imagery, multibeam acoustics, sidescan sonar, and LiDar).

Experience in computer scripting /programming for data visualization and presentation via a web browser

Experience in the operation, calibration, interfacing of hydroacoustic systems.

Experience in planning, conducting and evaluating projects to develop, enhance and measure the performance of hydroacoustic data acquisition systems and hydroacoustic calibration and data analysis techniques.

Stream 1
Experience in the provision of authoritative scientific advice and recommendation to internal and external clients (e.g. Canadian Science Advisory Secretariat).

Experience in coastal oceanography with application to small scale features (e.g. sedimentation processes, dilution and dispersion processes, waste transport, hypoxia, water quality)

Experience in interacting, collaborating and/or working with aquaculture industry.

Experience in carrying out collection, quality control, and analysis of scientific data.

Experience in conducting field work or going to sea.

Experience with deployment, recovery and maintenance of physical oceanographic instruments such as, but not limited to CTDs, ADCPs, or multi-parameter sondes.

Experience in developing methods or procedures for the collection and analysis of data.

Experience in implementing, improving and applying ocean circulation models such as FVCOM or NEMO to research problems
- PC-03: 3 years’ experience required
