Examiners interpret and apply the Act, the regulation and the relevant jurisprudence. Furthermore, they perform searches in databases, in order to determine if Intellectual Property rights can be granted.
Examiners also provide services to clients regarding their applications to explain any objections and requirements resulting from the examination process.
The intent of the process is to create a pool of partially or entirely qualified candidates that will be use to staff Examiner positions and/or similar positions with various tenures within the Trademarks Branch and/or Copyright and Industrial Designs Branch in Gatineau,

EDUCATION:
Graduation with a bachelor's degree from a recognized post-secondary institution;
OR
Graduation with a diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution AND experience in the application of an Intellectual Property Law;
OR
Be a Trade-Mark Agent.
EXPERIENCES:
E1: Recent experience* in applying laws or regulations.
E2: Experience in providing client services.
* Recent experience is normally acquired over the past two years.

Below is an overview of the different steps of the evaluation:
A written exam may be administered;
Public Service Entrance Exam – General Competency Test: Level 2 (GCT2) – may be administered. A personality test may be administered;
Interview will be conducted;
Reference checks will be conducted.
Note that a top-down selection may be used at any stage of the
selection process and that travel expenses for evaluation purposes
will not be reimbursed.
Candidates from outside the Federal Public Service will be required to pay for their own travel expenses associated with the assessment as well as relocation expenses, if applicable.
