Work environment

The Department of National Defence (DND) is one of the largest federal government employers. DND's role is to provide services and support to the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in their operations and missions at home and abroad. As a civilian employee, you will be an essential part of the Defence Team.

Intent of the process

The immediate need is for Casual Opportunities.

The inventory will be used to establish a candidate pool for filling current and future vacancies with various tenures (term, indeterminate, casual) for positions in Comox and Esquimalt, BC

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Occupational Certification

Specific to Stream 1:
Valid Certification from the Province of British Columbia in one of the following:

Level 1 Water Distribution Certification
Level 1 Water Treatment Plant Operator
Level 1 Wastewater Collection Certification
Petroleum Equipment Mechanic (PM3) Certification valid in the Province of British Columbia.

Or

Technician Qualification Level minimum QL5 or DP2 (Water, Fuel, and Environment Technician) in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Specific to Stream 2:
Possession Power Engineer Certificate – 3rd Class or 4th Class valid in the Province of British Columbia.

Experience
Specific to Stream 1:

EX1: Experience performing mechanical repairs and installations.
EX2: Experience performing maintenance and inspections on mechanical systems.
EX3: Experience in at least 1 of the following areas; wastewater collection systems, water distribution systems, water treatment or fuel distribution systems.
EX4: Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.

Or

Specific to Stream 2:

EX5: Experience in the operation and maintenance of a high and low pressure steam plant. Including ancillary equipment.
EX6: Experience operating and maintaining a high and low pressure steam plant.
EX7: Experience conducting and interpreting chemical tests and boiler water and determine control action.
EX8: Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS
Common to Both Streams:

AQ1: Certification in confined space entry.

Specific to Stream 1:
AQ2: Experience in waste-water treatment plant operations, maintenance and repair.
AQ3: Experience in sewage lift station maintenance and repair.
AQ4: Experience in taking samples for forwarding to laboratories.
AQ5: Experience in water distribution system operations, maintenance and repair.
AQ6: Experience in fuel farm operation, maintenance and repair.

Specific to Stream 2:
AQ7: Experience working as a Shift Engineer in a high pressure Central Heating Plant.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
OR1: Willing and able to attend all training as required.
OR2: Willing and able to stand, climb, walk, lift (23kg), carry (23kg) bend, pull and push, reach and crouch in hot and cold environments for extended periods of time.
OR3: Willing and able to obtain certification in First Aid (standard certification level).

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Must possess and maintain a valid, non-graduated, and unrestricted provincial or territorial Class 5 driver's licence.
• Eligibility and willingness to obtain and maintain the departmental Driver's license (DND 404).
• Willing and able to work on standby and respond to emergency call-outs after normal working hours.
• Willing and able to work for extended periods of time in adverse weather conditions.
• Willing and able to stand, climb, walk, lift (23kg), carry (23kg) bend, pull and push, reach and crouch in hot and cold environments for extended periods of time.
• Must be willing to wear and/or utilize personal protective equipment (PPE) in compliance with safety regulations or policies.
