Duties

Revises and applies jurilinguistic and linguistic expertise to judgments and reasons for judgments of chief justices and judges relating to high profile and national interest cases
Edits and revises draft judgments and reasons for judgment prepared in the language of origin, as well those prepared in the judges second language.
Provides jurilinguistic and linguistic advice on both official languages to chief justices, judges, law clerks, senior management and contracted revisers/translators on the proper usage and terminology for texts of the four courts, as well as to assist in evaluating the quality of language in other situations (e.g. specialized language proficiency testing in staff selection processes).
Revises and edits official translations of judgments and reasons for judgments to ensure the technical and legal accuracy and quality of the French and English versions.
Revises and edits administrative documents for the four courts of law, including the Office Consolidation of Acts and the Rules of Practice.
Reviews, monitors and evaluates the quality of the French and English versions.
Participates in the selection of suppliers of translation and revision services.

Intent of the process

A pool of prequalified or fully qualified candidates may be created to staff similar or identical positions with various tenure, various bilingual linguistic profiles and security requirements within the Courts Administration Service.

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. Some essential and other qualifications will be assessed through your application. It is your responsibility to provide appropriate examples that illustrate how you meet each qualification. In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Degree in law from a recognized university and acceptable combination of education, training and experience in translation and revision relevant to the duties of the position.

OR

Degree in translation from a recognized university and acceptable combination of education, training and experience in law relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Recent* and Extensive**experience in legal translation and revision from English to French or French to English.

* “Recent experience” means having acquired this experience within the last 10 years.
** “Extensive experience” means at least five (5) years of experience translating and/or revising legal texts, with such activities representing at least 80% of everyday tasks.

N.B.: The University of Ottawa’s Maîtrise en traduction juridique and Diplôme d’études supérieures en traduction juridique count for one (1) year of experience.

Experience in using a personal computer and software such as Microsoft Word to complete the revision of translated documents.

Knowledge of legal terminology and of jurilinguistics.
Knowledge of legal and language research tools and techniques.

Ability to revise legal translations from English to French or French to English.
Ability to compare the English and French versions of complex and sensitive legal texts that are to be published, with a view to identifying discrepancies between the two versions and making appropriate corrections and improvements to the translation.
Ability to identify, analyze and solve linguistic problems.
Ability to produce, when needed, faithful and idiomatic translations — from English to French or French to English — of legal and other texts.
Ability to work under pressure while observing set deadlines and priorities.
