The Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) work together to fulfill the Government of Canada’s mission to defend Canadian interests and values, and to contribute to international peace and security. DND is the largest federal government department in Canada and is part of the Public Service of Canada. Internally, DND and the CAF are collectively termed the Defence Team and civilians make up close to 25 per cent of the organization. As public servants and members of the Defence Team, civilians work side-by-side with CAF personnel for the defence of Canada and Canada’s contribution to international security and stability efforts.

The intent of this process is to immediately staff an indeterminate (permanent) position in Halifax, NS.

EDUCATION:
- Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution; or
- Professional certificate or diploma in safety from a post-secondary institution combined with a minimum of 3 years of safety work experience in an industrial setting.
EXPERIENCE:
- *Recent experience in the planning and delivery of occupational health and safety programs and/or projects inclusive of developing guidance and engaging stakeholders.
- *Recent experience conducting inspections and/or assessment/audits of occupational health and safety programs.
- *Recent experience conducting/analyzing accident investigations and/or inquiries.
- *Recent experience in the development and delivery of training and/or seminar sessions.
- *Recent experience in providing Health & Safety subject matter advice.
*Recent is defined as experience normally acquired within the last five (5) years.
ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a domain related to the position.
- Professional Certification in Risk Management or Project Management or Safety Management.
- Registered Occupational Hygienist (ROH)
- Experience preparing and managing contracts and/or contractual arrangements.
- Experience working with and developing National Defence safety and/or environmental programs, policies, procedures and directives.
- Experience working in a large industrial setting.
- Experience with safety and/or environmental management systems.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.
- Experience working in one or more environmental areas.
- Recent experience in conducting confined space (gas free) and hot work certifications / permits; fall arrest gear inspections; and verifying lockout / tagout procedures.

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Willingness and ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
- Willingness and ability to travel and work overtime.
- Willingness to wear personal protection equipment.
- Possession of a valid unrestricted Class 5 provincial driver’s license or equivalent.
Reliability Status security clearance
Occasionally, required to work in extreme weather conditions, to wear personal protective equipment and be exposed to occupational health and safety hazards when participating in investigations, inspections, and verifications and responding to emergency situations. There is also a requirement to work at heights and in confined spaces. In addition, must be willing to travel and work overtime on occasion.
Candidates must meet and maintain the Conditions of Employment throughout their employment.

Assessments will only be administered at a Canadian Armed Forces Base or Wing. Candidates are required to pay for their own travel expenses for any stage of the assessment process and will not be reimbursed.
At the time of assessment, proof of Canadian Citizenship, proof of Education and at least 2 work references will be required.
A random selection and/or top down selection may be used at any point during the assessment process.
All information obtained throughout the selection process, from the time of application to close of process, may/will be used to evaluate the candidates.
