Work environment

Working as part of a NRCan team, and with other government departments, the candidate will be responsible for conducting research using qualitative and quantitative methods, to help resolve issues related to phytosanitary concerns on the import and export of forest commodities caused by fungi and other pathogens. The candidate will also be responsible for reviewing and analyzing scientific research in support of policy decisions. The position also oversees the curation of the Pacific Forestry Centre forest pathology mycological collection, DAVFP.

Intent of the process

A pool of fully qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada ACROSS CANADA with various tenures (determinate period or indeterminate), various linguistic requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual) and profile(s) (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC), various security requirements (reliability or secret).

Graduation from a recognized university with a doctoral degree (Ph.D), with specialization in mycology or fungal plant pathology.

Productivity/Recognition:
Recognized research achievement as evidenced by authorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers or other communications of high standing. This must include authorship of research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Degree equivalency

Experience in conducting mycology or fungal plant pathology research.
Experience in use of molecular tools required for mycological research.
Experience in fungal identification using morphological methods.
Experience in the use of statistical methods.

Experience in phytosanitary research.
Experience in curation of biological collections.
Experience in Forestry related research.

Knowledge of phytosanitary principles as they relate to mycology and forest pathology.
Knowledge of fungal taxonomy and nomenclature.
Knowledge of Genomic and classical (morphological) methods related to fungal detection and identification.
Knowledge of methods and principles of curation of biological collection .

To communicate effectively in writing in English.
To communicate effectively orally in English.
To prepare research proposals and write scientific, technical and Interpretative papers, reports.
