Duties

The position supports multiple Programs of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) that may include, but are not limited to, GSC Energy Programs, Climate Change Programs, and Environmental Geoscience Programs.

Work Objectives include:
• Conducting original micropaleontology research and apply this to support GSC Programs;
• Collaborating with colleagues in multi-disciplinary research;
• Conducting and leading, as required, field work in support of GSC Programs;
• Conducting and providing leadership of laboratory work in support of GSC Programs;
• Assisting with mentoring of assistants, budget management, and leadership, as required;
• Reporting results through publication of peer-reviewed scientific papers, internal reports, professional presentations at conferences, workshops, and meetings; and
• Maintaining Canada’s international reputation in micropaleontology and become a leader by means of quality and productivity of research in the area of biostratigraphy, micropaleontology and paleoecology

Intent of the process

A pool of fully or partially qualified candidates may be established through this process to staff identical or similar positions at Natural Resources Canada at the SE-RES-01 to SE-RES-05 group and level with various tenures (determinate period or permanent), various language requirements (English Essential, French Essential, English or French Essential and Bilingual), various methods for staffing a bilingual position (imperative and/or non-imperative), and various profiles (BBB/BBB, CBC/CBC, CCC/CCC, etc.), various security requirements (Reliability Status, Secret) and with various conditions of employment and for various work locations.

Graduation with an acceptable doctoral degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural science with specialization relevant to the position, such as in one of the following microfossil groups: pollen and spores, dinoflagellate cysts, foraminifera, or conodonts.

Degree equivalency

EE1 - Experience conducting research in micropaleontology.
EE2 - Experience authoring scientific contributions including publishing in peer-reviewed literature and making presentations at scientific meetings.
EE3 – Experience managing a scientific research team.

*Productivity or recognition is required for all positions in the Research Scientist sub-group (SE-RES). Productivity or recognition includes developmental work leading to the issue of patents, copyrights, or the creation of improved varieties, functions, or designs, and/or recognition by the professional community of the research environment. It also refers to recognized achievement in the form of authorship and editorship of published or unpublished reports, books, papers, or other communications resulting from:
• Research, experimental development, or tasking associated with operational equipment and problems;
• Operational research and scientific analysis;
• Planning, analysis and evaluation of Canadian and foreign programs in research and development.

K1 - Knowledge of the classification of one of the following microfossils: pollen, spores, dinoflagellate cysts, foraminifera, and/or conodonts.
K2 - Knowledge of microfossil application to stratigraphy.
K3 - Knowledge of microfossil application to paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
K4 - Knowledge of laboratory procedures for microfossil extraction.

A1 - Ability to develop new approaches to solving geological problems with micropaleontology.
A2 - Ability to communicate research and findings effectively orally.
A3 - Ability to communicate research and findings effectively in writing.

AK3 - Knowledge of Canadian sedimentary basin geology.
AK4 - Knowledge of multiple microfossil types.

Periodical medical assessments are required for scientific fieldwork.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance - This factor is not used at the screening stage. The hiring department is responsible for the security clearance process.

Willingness to travel.
Willingness to work in remote and isolated field locations for prolonged periods of time.
Willingness to conduct physically demanding field work.
