Under the supervision of the branch director/manager, the incumbent manages and guides a section responsible for a scientific program with specialized components and scientific studies in fisheries and aquatic sciences, supporting Fisheries and Oceans Canada's objectives, which are to ensure the health and productivity of aquatic ecosystems and the sustainability of fisheries and aquaculture.
A pool of qualified candidates may established in order to staff similar positions with various tenures and various security levels, in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. Graduation with a degree (A bachelor's degree or a higher level degree, as established by educational authorities) from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.
1. Recent* experience in planning, managing and administering human, financial and material resources.
2. Experience in providing scientific advice as an authority to scientists and/or managers.
3. Experience in writing, reviewing and publishing authoritative scientific documents, reports and/or articles in aquatic sciences.
4. Significant** and recent* experience in planning and coordinating activities as a project lead in at least one of the following areas:
• Research on commercial, invasive or at-risk species
• Stock assessments for fished, invasive or at-risk species
• Surveys of fished, invasive or at-risk species
• Sampling of commercial fisheries
• Research on ecosystem function and productivity
• Research on the support capacity and environmental impacts of aquaculture
5. Experience in working with non-federal governments, industry or universities through collaborative agreements or other formal arrangements, including research grants (NSERC, FQRNT, etc.).
6. Experience in presenting scientific research to various audiences.
*Recent means in the last five years.
**Significant experience is defined as experience acquired through full-time duties over a continuous period of at least two years.
University degree in biology or in related field with specialization in fisheries science, marine biology/ecology or oceanography.
Occasional variable work schedule, including being called back outside of regular working hours and on weekends and statutory holidays.

Information on language requirements
1. Knowledge of the key groups of stakeholders and their roles in DFO's regulation and consultation processes under the Fisheries Act, Oceans Act and Species at Risk Act.
2. Knowledge of the principles and practices in aquatic ecology and biology related to the main mandates of the Science Branch in terms of assessment of fisheries resources, aquatic invasive species and aquaculture.
