Duties

Overhaul, maintenance, repair and fitting-out of small vessels, for Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) operational programs, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) programs, such as Science, Hydrography, Conservation & Protection, Fisheries Management, and other government departments. Ensures small vessels meet Transport Canada marine safety self-inspection regulatory requirements.

Develops, recommends and/or implements economically and environmentally sustainable practices in support of the Life Cycle Asset Management System (LCAMS) program and CCG and DFO priorities.

Carries out the new installation and preventative and corrective maintenance (including overhaul, refit, repair, configuration changes, tests and inspection) of hull, mechanical and electrical systems on small vessels, small craft and their trailers and other associated equipment.

Intent of the process

This process intent to constitute a pool of qualified candidates to fill permanent, specified periods and seasonal positions in Mont-Joli (Qc), Sorel-Tracy (Qc) and Burlington (On). The pool may also be used to fill similar positions to other locations within Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard.

EDUCATION:
High school diploma or acceptable combination of education, training and experience related to the position to be filled;

Degree equivalency

Occupational specialization as a mechanic or an electro-mechanic:
For the purposes of this selection process, candidates may demonstrate their occupational specialization through any of the following:

Successful completion of post-secondary education or vocational diploma in a field relevant to the duties of the position, such as Heavy duty equipment mechanics (NOC#7312)*, Automotive service technician (NOC#7321), Recreational vehicle mechanics (NOC#7334).
OR
Significant** experience as a mechanic, technician or electro-mechanic in one of the fields listed in the above paragraph, including experience gained servicing vehicles, aircraft or vessels in the Canadian Armed Forces.
OR
A combination of education, training and experience outlined in their application that they consider equivalent to an occupational specialization in the fields indicated.

**Significant experience is defined as experience associated with having performed a broad range of related activities, which could normally be acquired during a period of approximately 2 years. EXPERIENCE:
Experience in identifying and troubleshooting of small vessel mechanical problems.

Experience in the use of computer software for the purpose of tracking motor-driven equipment maintenance.

Experience in repair and maintenance of inboard diesel engines.

Experience in repair and maintenance of stern drive.

TRAINING - CERTIFICATIONS:
Diploma as a marine engine mechanic or as an outboard engine mechanic from a recognized training institution. (Including certification provided by a motor manufacturer).

A Marine Engineer certificate delivered by Transport Canada.

Willingness and be able to work overtime, on weekends, and stand-by duty.

Willingness and be able to travel by small vessel, ship, airplane or helicopter.

Valid Driver's license of Class 5 in Québec, Class G in Ontario or equivalent.

Willingness and be able to work at heights, in small and confined spaces, and under adverse weather conditions.

If the position requires it, willingness to be posted in remote areas for periods of up to 4 weeks one to three times per year.

Other information
